Caneel Bay Text addicts

Over the past week, my husband and I “escaped” to St. John in the Virgin Islands.  (I’m pretty sure I went with my husband, but I also feel like I haven’t seen him in years…so, who knows…).  We’re calling it our belated honeymoon, but really, we just needed the rejuvenation from our sons’ non-stop romper-room activity and a hectic work schedule.  The day before we left, my post on Facebook questioned whether or not I could disengage from technology- my phone, social networking and internet access in general.  Could I do it?  Would it be hard?  Or would it be as natural as turning the light off before going to bed?

Upon arrival, we quickly settled into all the benefits the island had to offer.  The weather was perfect, the sand colored like sugar, the ocean was gentle and warm like a soaking bath and the food was out of this world.  My husband and I were able to give new meaning to the word “relax.”  (Or at least our definition of the word “relax.”).  In short, YES, I could abandon the phone, the computer and almost everything electronic-related at pretty much the drop of a hat.room

Fast-forward to day three.  After morning snorkeling, my husband and I were soaking up the sun and spectacular views at Caneel Bay when we noticed two couples a few yards away.  Four twenty-somethings, looking like they jumped out of a recent edition of a JCrew catalog, sat facing each other on lounge chairs.  But when I say “facing each other,” I don’t mean talking.  They were all hunched over their individual phones!  Really... Maybe they were texting each other…? I don’t think I heard a word from them until I asked one of the girls to take a picture of us, but when I asked she was super-friendly.

My husband and I laughed about it later on.  They were probably recharging from their nightlife —we were just recharging from life in general.  Who knows what shocking sight those four youngsters will see 20 years from now when they look at our 23 year old boys on the beach?  Well, whatever technology they see, it better be being used to call their Mom!!us

I wonder if those 4 20-somethings were couples married to each other or just singles on a trip together. I think I liked your idea of relaxation better.

Hillary - It's interesting how we just can't live with out our technology, but when we have the chance to turn it all off, what a breath of fresh air.  I'm glad you had a great vacation.  Loved the photos!

Hillary, that's really a cute blog.  It is difficult for any of us to get away from technology when we feel like it affects our business and therefore our lives.  Glad you had a great vacation!

Hillary, Congratulations on your belated, long overdue honeymoon. You did not miss anything by not being connected. You had the most important connection right there with you.
