SOPA: Will SOPA & PIPA kill the Internet?

I have been reading a bit about the whole Wikipedia blackout thing. It is in prostest of SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect Intelectectual Property Act).

On the surface the bills sound good to me. Who doesn't want to stop the foreign internet theives? They are a cancer to our society.

But what is the cost to the internet functionality? Will these bills actually stifle creativity, and slow down the development, and productivity of the web?

Rep, Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), has stated that Republican leaders told him that the House would not vote on a version of any Bill that the effected tech companies, like Google, Wikipedia, Twitter, disagree with. California Repuplican Representative Issa states "Much more education for Members of Congress about the workings of the Internet is essential."

I am keeping an eye on this issue. It is something that effects us all. I want to ensure the Intellectual Property rights of people, but at the same time we need to make sure we don't destroy our Internet.

I don't think that the lawmakers know enough about the possible UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES of the bills. I think there needs to be a whole lot more research, and public education, about the bills before they pull the trigger on them.

What are your thoughts on this?
