What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think about Michigan?

Michigan vs. Ohio State........this Saturday in Ann Arbor, where we both once again play for the Big Ten Championship.

Tailgating at UM game, Andrew, BEKA and ChristaThursday night, Banfields West Sports Bar in Ann Arbor is sponsoring a Chili Cook contest. My daughter entered with my Southurn Chili. Every area of the country has its own flavor of chili. Where I grew up in Paducah, KY my mom always added noodles and not beans.

The first time my daughter ordered chili in Ann Arbor and it was served without noodles, she looked at the server and said, "Where's the noodles?"  The server told her you're talking about spaghetti. LOL

MIchigan HelmetThe Michigan and Ohio State football teams have been playing each other since 1897. However the rivalry didn't explode until Bo Schembechler, from Ohio started coaching at Michigan in 1969.  "Bo" had been an assistant coach under the great Woody Hayes and Michigan won 24-12, setting off one of the biggest rivalries in college football. This became known as the 10 Year War between Woody and Bo from 1969 to 1978.

The first year we moved to Michigan in 1980, I went into labor with our second child at the start of the Michigan vs. Ohio State game. Guess who had to wait until half-time to be taken to the hospital?  That was my first introduction to how big the rivalry was.

The game is the last game of the year for both teams and since 1935 has been the deciding factor, 35 times in who goes to the Rose Bowl and becomes Big Ten Champions.

I have enjoyed getting to know so many fellow bloggers on Activerain that live in Ohio, occasionally we tease each other. OSU helmet

Anyone coming to Ann Arbor for the game ?

Go Blue !!!

Missy I am going to send David and Elaine to deal with you. Real Buckeyes... after I put a counter on my blogs. I was looing for one earlier this week but got sidetracked. Of course I can't just steal yours because of the heresy about MI beating OSU.

A REAL BUCKEYE CHECKING IN!

News Report: Michigan Av was just renamed BUCKEYE WAY in Columbus. All the Columbus dignataries are there at the ceremony.

I've been to the Big House several times. Went to all of Archie's home games PLUS the away state-up-north games. Froze my arse off each time. Yes, I was there for the "yard-marker" incident.

Revelation: The Big House was built in a HOLE.

I let Anne Hayes bum cigs from me at one of our Alumni meetings - Woody didn't like her to smoke.

The Buckeye nut in the photo has been signed by Anne, Archie & Ray Griffin and Corney Green. My girls are fighting over who gets it when I croak.

Missy....  cute, I loved the story about your daughter and the noodles... lol    And what a small world... my dad makes his chili with noodles also. But also with beans. And I keep forgetting that you actually grew up in Ky.... once again, a small world.

In regards to Ohio State, I need you all to beat them so West Virginia can move up a little.....  Go Blue...

In regards to Elaine's picture... love it.  lol

Chili made with noodles?  That's new to me, unless you count chili spaghetti. You just pour the chili over a bowl of spaghetti and add lots of shredded cheese.  Would be good for football games.  Sounds like your family is having a lot of fun!

My husband is a U of M alumni so Michigan is his team! Go Blue! We have a "Bo" bobble-head and various other "Michigan" stuff on shelves in the basement rec room. Not sure what is going to happen when Nick chooses to go to another Big 10 University next year...oh, the trauma. :)

Elaine, ahh I was hoping you would show up, where's my friend David. I'm cracking up, we are in a hole the biggest hole in the nation. And changing MI Ave to Buckeye Way is a hoot.

I could say a few things but I will be a lady. LOL

TLW, I use to think that too. Oh and the rusted cars I would see driving down South. Ugly blue and rusted license plates. Actually Michigan is a beautiful state and Ann Arbor is right 30 miles N of Ohio in a valley and we don't get a ton of snow. Some years more than others. Today it is 58.

My biggest complaint is the gray days........but the weather is fine. 8 months of the year. Very mild.

Carole, honetly know how you all felt.

Jeff, we got your back...

Yes, Missy, we'll both be "ladies", but it's still BEAT MICHIGAN WEEK in Columbus. Then we'll go back to being friends again.

Don't know what it's like in Ann Arbor, but our town will be pretty much closed for business Sat - except for pizza delivery (expect long lead times) and carry-outs. Any stores that are open will be playing TBDBITL music and/or have the game on over the PA system. Some have TV's so customers can watch. It's the only way they stand to have customers come in. Streets are so vacant it's eerie.

As always, all the stats go out the window, and it becomes THE GAME! For those few hours, the world stops. Heaven knows enough OSU coaches have lost their jobs based on losing to that state-up-north.

BTW, your chili sounds like Skyline Chili from Cincy.

Missy

I was planning to watch it on TV but I just had an appointment scheduled for 1 PM. The big question is, being in Ann Arbor, do you have any inside info on whether Henne and Hart are going to play? We probably don't have much chance of winning without them.

Missy, once your daughter wins the chili cooking contest, I hope you'll share your recipe! I had it once with macaroni, and it was quite wonderful!

Terry, no one knows, Michigan is very quiet about those things, but the rumor is Lloyd will retire after the game, win or lose.

Elaine, Ann Arbor doesn't shut down, too many intellectuals here. LOL. But, no one goes near the mall.

Patricia, I'll share now, it's no biggie, easy, quick and good. Better when it sits over night that's why we're doing it tonight.

Stir fry about 4 lbs. ground chuck with alot of onions. DRAIN OFF FAT!!

Add 2 packages of chili seasonings. A little water.

Add 2  can of Rotel Chili Green tomatoes and pepper.

Add 4-5 cans of Hormel NO bean chili.

While you are making this boil water and add thin spagettii noodles. When they are still FIRM, dump them and the water they were cooked in, into the mixture.

Simmer until all the ingrediates meld together.

Viola !!

My family likes it right away, but it is really better the next day.

Cincinnati Chili has spaghetti and beans in a four way and a five way! The flavor and texture is totally  different.  Not spicy.  We used to do a chilli cook off at our office tailgate party and no one ever did Cincinnati Chili.  I used to enjoy an inverted five way... mmm mmm. Wikipedia has an entry... I Googled to see what the difference was in a four way and a five way.

Maureen, I just Googled it. I'd just mix it together, too much adding on top to suit me.

Maybe that's why people don't often make it... they serve it up that way...at Skyline, Goldstar, etc.   the onions have to be raw not cooked.  The  cheese can't be melted...  It can't be mixed together... it's just not right. the first time I had it I did not like it but I got addicted to it when I lived in Dayton.

Hi Missy,

Both sound like fun to me, the game and the chili cookoff. BTW, I've never heard of chili with noodles before, but sounds good do. As for team favorities, we're pretty much USC fans here in SoCal.

Have fun!

"intellectuals' ............. oh-h that hurt! ..... and you look so-o sweet in your photo. ;-)

In tonight's sports segment, they mentioned the number of OH guys on the MI team and the number of MI guys on the OH team. Isn't it nice that we share! However, Ohio has the most All-Americans and Heisman winners.

Hi Missy,
Good luck to your daughter with her chili!  I've never had noodles with chili but why not?  Love a good college sports rivalry.  Our ACC basketball starts soon and I can't wait.  Enjoy the game, I'm not taking sides.

Missy, I live in Ann Arbor myself and have an old college friend and fellow UofM fan flying in from San Antonio, TX as well as a friend from Cleveland who is a fan of that school to the south of us coming into town for the weekend.  I'm really looking forward to it as the three of us haven't seen each other since the 2003 Michigan-Ohio State game weekend.

As a UofM alumnus I have two words to say.

Go Blue!!!!!!!!

(kind-of)  Miiiiichgannnnn graduated 72!  Noodles?....I would have said the opposite....where's the beans.  Sounds good though.....maybe Saturday!  Great post thanks for the feature heads ups. The quilt museum is fantastic, I grew up there. My mom used to keep quilters in her home as there was not enough hotel space in town. I use to twice a year until mom passed away.

Misssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssy I was in the Detroit area this weekend, mostly in Dearborn and Dearborn Heights... but we did some running around on Sunday.  We waited until after all the traffic going up 23 for the game would be there so we would not get stuck in traffic needlessly.... I had to listent to the start of the game on the radio... but got to watch the second half on TV.

I only saw one car with a U of M flag and a placard that said ohhowihateohiostate...  Sunday.
