 Seven Fire Safety Tips

Recently, several home fires have made the National News. There are fFire Safetyew things more tragic than homes and lives destroyed by fire. Unfortunately, many of the conditions that cause house fires can be prevented or avoided by the homeowners.

Taking a few precautions can save lives and your possessions.

1. Wood burning fireplaces should be professionally cleaned and inspected each year. The build up of Creosote can be very dangerous and can cause a flash fire in the chimney.

2. Check all the cords and plugs on electrical appliances and equipment for fraying or exposed wires.

3. Space heaters should not be left unattended. They should be place away from curtains, bedding, papers or anything flammable.

Fire Safety4. 60% of the fatalities from home fires occur in homes with either no smoke detectors or non-working detectors. Even Smoke Detectors that are hard-wired to y our homes electrical system need to have fresh backup batteries. Batteries should be replace at least yearly, if not twice each year.

5. Candles should be never be left unattended. They should be placed in appropriate holders away from curtains and other flammable objects.

6. Kitchen fires are one of the most common types of fires and they happen all year long. Many are caused by unattended grease spills on the stove or in the oven. Other causes are loose clothing hanging near a flame.

Finally, have an escape plan. This is the one thing that you can do to make sure that no one gets hurt.

Thanks for the reminder Anna... During Christmas with the grand-kids we talked till we were blue in the face about them being upstairs and what they would do in case of a house fire.  One can never be too careful.

Anna, considering I set the fire alarm off twice last week, one would think I need this review, however, it was just a little smoke because I was to lazy to put on the stove fan. I've learned my lesson!

Hi Anna,

Very good re post.

Not enough home owners have the information they need nor do they use the information they already have. You would'nt believe the homes I inspect that don't have a working smoke alarm or CO detectors.

Sad but true.

Have a great day in Arizona.

Best, Clint McKie

Anna just let me add to the list.  Never, ever leave the house or go to sleep with the dryer on.  We see a lot of fires from clothes dryers.

Anna, we could talk about this until we're blue in the face and it wouldn't be too much. Fires are devastating.

Don't forget about dryer lint traps and vents!  It is truly tragic when these things happen and even moreso when it is preventable.  Thanks for the friendly reminders Anna!

Anna,  There are so many things we use that are fire hazards and we just don’t think about them much or until it is too late.  A young boy died recently due to a fire caused by an electric blanket. So sad and tragic.

@Andre ... unless he has his camera!
