I have just finished creating accounts on "Facebook" and "My Space" and it was only last week that I started my Active Rain account. I can feel the lines blurring between the concrete bricks and sticks reality that I have always worked in, and the glare of my computer screen that I have been staring at for hours on end over the last few days as I attempt to "Create Myself" in the virtual world. It is an exhilarating feeling though because instead of making cold calls or acting busy in this down time I feel I have done something very productive for the future of my business. Planting the seeds on the internet and nurturing them (as I have already started with AR) feels right down deep in my gut.
Anyone trying to convince themselves that the way they were taught to "create business" through mailings, cold calls, floor time, keeping in touch with constant mailers, farming a geographic community, are doing just that - kidding themselves. The future and I mean the ENTIRE future of Real Estate is going to be controlled on the internet. All other forms of communication are WAY TOO SLOW for the future home owners of America.
Yes you can still sell to your family friends, and a few older people who will always do things they way they have done them in the past, but that market is growing smaller by the day and if you choose to stay that cake will shrink to the size of a muffin, then a doughnut hole, maybe a crumb and poof you will be out of business cause there will be nothing of sustenance left to sustain you.
If you love real estate and want to be a big part of its future you must embrace change, embrace technology, and hang on tight cause the changes are just going to keep coming faster and faster (good thing I LOVE ROLLER COASTERS!)
Oh, got off track just a little bit - the point of this entry was to say if you haven't already given yourself a presence on Facebook or MY Space please go do it (now!) you are going to see your local state associations and NAR start to point yourself in that direction in the near future and if you go get started there now you will beat the crowd and get to choose the better URL's and identities. (Good Luck!)
Welcome to the new world John. While social networking is definitely a part of the future, we can't ever forget that real estate is a people business. If we are not in front of people everyday then we are missing the boat. I have found many social networking sites to be an effective way to meet people face to face. Try Meetup.com and Biznik.com both are great if they are in your area. I always have to fight the balancing act between the virtual world and good ole Reality.
