Shelter for Tyson—Finally

Written by Jeff Mackey

Say "Hi" to Tyson, one of the newest recipients of a custom-built doghouse from PETA, along with lots of straw bedding to help keep out the cold. As you can see from the "before" picture below, he desperately needed it. All four (!) of Tyson's previous (flimsy) "shelters" had broken. But now he has a sturdy, custom-built doghouse for cold, wet winter nights—and since it's built to last, he can count on it for years to come. Tyson's family agreed to have him neutered, so PETA will take care of that too.

Tyson before

Tyson after

Of course, we'd much prefer that everyone allow their dogs indoors—and PETA's Community Animal Project caseworkers have persuaded many animals' guardians to do just that. But since some people refuse—and since many localities still don't prohibit chaining dogs—PETA builds and delivers hundreds of rugged doghouses each year to provide dogs with protection from snow, wind, and rain. In the winter, PETA also gives away free bales of straw for cold dogs forced to live outdoors in the Hampton Roads area in Virginia.

You can change a life like Tyson's. If you know of any "outdoor dogs," try to persuade their guardians to allow them indoors. Encourage your city or county legislators to ban chaining. And if you can, sponsor a doghouse so that one more dog will have a refuge from the cold.

Thank goodness for PETA.  Dogs are supposed to be family pets, not outdoor attachments.  I too am a animal volunteer, so I "get it".

Thank you for making others aware...

Bring TYSON inside!

Good for Tyson.  I breaks my heart to see a dog tied outside, but if that's going to be the case, they should have everything they need to be comfortable and to survive.

Eve, love to hear from other animal activists!  I agree with you...Reminds me of when we protest puppy mills and puppy auctions in parts of WI here, and the Amish scream at us and can't believe we think dogs should be indoors :-(

Good looking dog. I thought this was the English bulldog on the skateboard that I was going to see entertain us.

I didn't know that PETA did this kind of thing. I think it's great. I don't believe in chaining out a dog. My dogs are members of my family and deserve to be indoors with us. We had a dog that was dumped near us. We ended up taking her in. It was obvious she had never been allowed indoors before. It took two of us to get her in the house the first time.

Reminds me of Snoopy on top of the dog house.  Only thing lacking is the typewriter and little yellow bird!  Darling dog and nice shelters to help protect those sweet ones from the weather!  A place to call home.

Ron, correct and brought inside!

Debbie, bless you for bringing in the dog...I feel the same way...I don't have kids, I have furbabies who are part of my family too!

COnnie, I'd prefer a REAL home, but yes, it is better than nothing !

Even our four legged friends need homes... preferably indoor ones. But homes nonetheless.

I'm so glad Tyson has shelter, but I really think a doggie belongs INDOORS in the winter.  PETA does a great job Kristin.  What a lovely puppy he is!

A more solid shelter is definitely an improvement, Tyson even looks happier.  There's a group here locally that builds fences for chained dogs and works with the owners, they do some really great work in the community

I just thought I would check back at the comments. Everyone agrees that Tyson has traded up. He is a good looking dog. Bless you for having furbabies. My husband and I were a mommy and daddy before we even had kids. We started off our life together with pets.
