Extreme Winter Weather – Be Prepared!
My friend and collaeague lives in Canada, but cold weather preparation is important wherever you live. Please leave a comment on Karen's post. She will appreciate it.
Extreme Winter Weather – Be Prepared!
With the recent weather advisories it’s very important that homeowners ensure they are prepared for extreme winter weather. Winter has definitely arrived!
Winter storms may result in power outages or other emergency situations:
· Ensure your emergency kit is prepared and handy – double-check all supplies, including non-perishable foods and beverages, flashlights, lanterns, medications, baby formula and diapers, pet supplies, first aid supplies, batteries, radio, spare blankets and warm clothes. You should be able to care for yourself for a minimum of 72 hours without service.
· Prevent plumbing from freezing – insulate exposed plumbing pipes, drain all garden hoses, leave some heat on in outbuildings
· Know where your water main is and your gas line – you may need to shut them off in an emergency
· Homeowners are responsible for ensuring their walkways and sidewalks remain clear of snow and debris – ensure you make arrangements to remove snow on a daily basis if you are unable to care for this yourself
· Always ensure back-up heating units are properly vented!
Follow weather and travel advisories – if you are advised to stay off the road, then heed the restrictions. Always check road conditions before traveling – and ensure your vehicle is suitable for the conditions. When traveling, be prepared for the unexpected – keep car gas tanks full and make sure your vehicle also has a winter weather emergency kit.
