AR - Newbie to Newbie

Newbie to Newbie-fearFor those of you feeling a little apprehensive about posting a blog, allow me a moment to tell you what happens after you hit the submit button.  But before we get there, I know how you’re feeling; there you are with your most private thoughts sitting before you on the blog entry form.  You’ve selected a jazzy title; every tag is perfect and each ‘Post To’ block has been checked.  All that’s left to do is change the ‘Visibility’ drop down menu from ‘Draft’ to whatever, then the submit button is clicked.  If you’re like me, visions of freezing up in front of your parents at your 3rd grade music recital start to flash across your mind, as terror stricken you - Then you have thoughts of being ridiculed by everyone in the world who comes across your post.  But WAIT!!! You forgot to spell check!!!! Panic ensues. In that moment of desperation, you figure out your post can be edited, WHEW!!!- You do so, then sit in terrified silence, with your thoughts totally exposed, awaiting your first comment.

Newbie to Newbie-happyHere’s where the love comes in.  To your surprise you’re greeted with a warm welcome and a pat on the  back (thanks Brenda) for good blog posting; then another and yet another.  You respond thanking them for taking time to visit your site. You may also be fortunate enough to be profiled in a blog by some terrific people (thanks Jerry and Charita). These wonderful people, with all of the pretty little badges under their pictures will also offer you FREE unsolicited advice.  Allow me to share some of the advice bequeathed to me: subscribe to other people blogs, comment often to other posts, ensure your profile is filled in completely and make sure to sign up for classes in AR University. You’ll find that if you follow these small but significant steps – you will save yourself weeks of frustration instead of trying to wing it! Here’s the amazing part, the more you blog the easier it gets to write, more people will comment, more will subscribe, more will become associates and even better than that, become friends.

Finally, don’t get caught up with your bottom line.  It’s the intangibles that offer the greatest returns. Counseling from very experienced people; advice on marketing, mortgages, home inspections, SEO stats and much more is all here and it’s FREE! So hang in there, for I am positive your business will be better off with AR than without. Please keep this in mind…

‘If you write it, they will come’.  Be Well!

It's funny how everyone starts off in the same boat it seems like. We all get really nervous about our first post and build it up to be this huge thing, and then we do, and we find a whole other world of supporters and educators out there! Congrats on making that leap!

Excellent advice! I would also join the Newbies Group where how too's are also discussed in more detail. I hope that if you have any questions you will just email & ask. Many years ago when I joined I had to wing it & it was brutal. Don't do things correctly in the 'play ground' & some will be mean spirited like your back in the 3rd grade.

Good luck & see you around.

What a great post for newbies and oldies.  I've went back to edit a few posts that I threw into public to realize seconds later there were errors or the pictures didn't line up right, etc.   I've been a member of AR and blogging since 2007 and I still hold my breath when I hit the post to public button!

Hi Ron - Great advice.  I have been a newbie for many years.  It is hard to get up the learning curve and just learn to be yourself.  Good luck!

As a newbie myself, you just inspired me to submit my first blog post - I've written the draft, but then put it away. Thanks for the encouragement!

Ron,

I AM a newbie with Active Rain.  You are right....it makes me a bit uneasy to write, but yours seemed like a great place to start.  I thank you for your encouragement, but after reading your profile, it was imperative for me to THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU HAVE DONE FOR OUR NATION!

I look forward to reading more of your blogs!
