Understanding the infrastructure of marketing. Consistency over time is the key!Business is cyclical. Marketing is not! A good marketing plan must be consistently implemented over time to be successful.

Too many businesses ignore marketing while they are busy, and then splurge on it during the slow times.

But pushing peaks of marketing against the troughs of weak business is reactionary and results in a significant lag between marketing and new business.

Consistent, dedicated marketing over time acts a damper that mitigates the extreme cycles of business and governs the fluctuations into a manageable flow.

So even the busiest of times demands an allocation of resources for marketing. It’s the best way to prepare for the inevitable downturn.

And steady business is a lot mare manageable and a lot less frustrating!

Consistency is the key but consistency is also the hardest part of the equation to achieve. I've always believe all srategies work if we give it enough time to saturate. But we live in a microwave society. If it doesnt work out instantly, then I'm moving on.

Those who heed success are those who pick up their daily cross.

Great point. If we keep marketing when we are busy, the the slow cycles wont be quite so slow!

Theres that word consistancy again. The one word that is so hard for so many. Yet anything worth achieving requires consistancy towards that goal. It can be a tough road to travel but oh so worth the journey.

Consistent product placement (us) is critical. Using the most cost effective means to keep ourselves in the public eye is critical - especially in down cycles.

Many times agents expect that one postcard sent out should make that phone ring off the wall.  Disappointed they quit that type of advertising and move onward to other on shot attempts.  You have to ask for business many times over and the public needs to see your name over and over before good results take place.  That is a simple fact on marketing.

Richard, my electrical contracting company does little marketing, but we've had a small ad in the classifeds for over 20 years.  It is 33% of our business.  I see young start up companies place ads there, run them for 30 days and then disappear.  In 30 days they typically don't get any business.  So, they move on.  What they don't know is that on average it takes 90 days for your business to get noticed in the classifeds.   Consistency yields rewards.  Have a great weekend!

Very wise words here, Richard.  Marketing must be conducted all the time, not just when you think you have time for it.  So many don't get that ... so I'm FEATURING your post on BananaTude today with the hopes that your wisdom will spread to others ... and have a rippling effect.  Congrats on the FEATURE ... AND having figured out how marketing should really be conducted ...

I've worked with a lot of agents over the years and what you say is so true... The agents at the top were the one's that had a solid marketing plan and worked it consistently... and the one's at the bottom were those that chased deals, stopped marketing when they got busy, then hyper blitz it when they were slow, rinse, and repeat. Good reminders especially at this time of year... Thanks.

marketing is key - it's part of branding yourself and getting known in your area of expertise.  We are continuing to market full board in this economy and are the only real estate firm that showed growth in 2011 - we will continue and hope when the light turns on. . . we are what shines! :)  Great post!

Loreena...

You have to keep doing it, even when you don't have the time to do it! THX.

Ciara...

That's right, and no slow cycles is a good thing! Thanks.

Martha...

It is hard at times, but we have to keep at it! Thanks for the comment.

Richard,

So true. Consistancy is the name of the game. I don't mind peak months as long as I can avoid the valley months!
