On the rare occasions that she did call, it was usually to tell us someone was dead.

Mickey doesn't call!

When each of us left the nest, she gave us the same speech.  "Don't expect to hear from me.  I don't meddle in my kids lives.  If you need me, you know where to find me".

She was true to her word!

On the rare occasions that she did call, it was usually to tell us someone was dead.

Friday night, my phone rang.  I answered it and it was Mickey.  My first inclination was to say "Who's Dead?" but I didn't.

Mickey: Roger, it's your Mother, I missed you so I called. (She laughs)

Me:  Now that's funny Mickey.  What's wrong?

Mickey:  Why are you asking what's wrong?  Nothing's wrong, I missed you. (She laughs)

Me: You saw me last night, and you never call me Mickey, what's wrong?

Mickey:  Well, you know how I was coughing and bringing up all the phlegm, I didn't sleep all night and it was worse this morning.

Me:  You didn't sleep because you were too excited about kicking my A$$ at cards.

Mickey:   (She laughs)  Ron took me to the doctor.  He checked everything and then sent me to the hospital for some tests and a chest x-ray.

Me:  Are you at the hospital now?  Did they admit you?

Mickey:  No, we got home around 5:00, but we were gone all day.

Me:  So, what did they tell you at the hospital?

Mickey:  Well at first they thought congestive heart failure again, then they thought fluid in my lungs since I'm having a hard time breathing.  Turns out I have bronchitis and they gave me a prescription for antibiotics and a breathing machine I have to use four times a day.  I have to go back to my doctor next week.

Me:  Well bronchitis is the lesser of all the evils Mick, don't you think?

Mickey:  Oh yeah......so that's it, I just called you because I didn't want you to worry.

Me:  Well thanks for calling Mickey, I'm not the least bit worried, as long as you do what they told you to do.

 Are you worried?

Mickey:  Who me?  Worry?  No, I'm not worried.

I think she lied!

Yeah, okay, maybe I lied too!

So why do you think Mickey called?

Roger, would you mind having Mickey give my Mother a call?  Oh wait, it's too late.  That should have happened 30 years ago. (lol).  Seriously, I think she was a little scared and just wanted to talk to you for reassurance.  It's very sweet.

Hey Garlic Man -  I think she's looking for a role in one of the Bell ads.  You know the ones where they tell us to "Reach out and Touch Someone".   I often explain to my Mother that the phone works both ways too!  In their generation, phones are a luxury item to be used sparingly like good china and perfume.   How sweet that when she wanted to ' touch '  someone, it was you she chose!!!

Make sure you tell us by how much Mickey beat you in cards today :0)

Mickey had to have been worrying about all those possible diagnoses that we all never want to hear. She needed to hear from her old roomy that wasn't part of the chaos of the day. She needed you to be calm reassuring Roger and you were ;).

Mickey called you because you are the voice of reason, the one she trusts most.  You have a very special bond and I'm sure she couldn't wait to fill you in on her day and hear your response.

My 2 yr. old grandson, Zack, (the blonde one) has started calling his mom by her first name...it's quite adorable.

Hello Mr. Bond.

I do remember your name it's Roger Mucci. Who could forget the name?. And yes ActiveRain Does Rock.

With that said, I hope you get to feeling better. I hope it's nothing so serious that you end up in the hospital.

Do what the Doctors tell you to do. I can see why your mother Mickey was worried about you.

Take care of yourself.

All my best, Clint McKie

She called you because she wants you to be there with her right now Roger. She knows she's getting on in the years and she wants to spend time with you. Go over there the moment you can.

Roger, when moms do that, I believe it is because they are scared, and just in case something happens to them (which it usually doesn't), they want to know they told you they love you!

Hi Roger--why do I think Mickey called?  I think because she loves you and you are probably the solid rock in her life that can always be depended upon.  I hope she is feeling better soon.  And maybe you can call her tomorrow and tell her all of her friends on AR are thinking about her and hoping she gets better soon.

Roger, she called because she loves you and needed to "touch"-just to make sure her rock was still there and that she could hang on for safety.  What a wonderful person and relationship you two have!

Lets shake things up at your home today!

Mickey has always been an amazing Mom and we've had a wonderful relationship as far back as I can remember.  Trust me, I piss her off and she pisses me off, but that's what makes it work so well.  We have our little argument or disagreement and then we move on..............no hard feelings, no grudges.

Before I wrote this post, I knew exactly why Mickey called me, I just wanted to see what my AR friends thought.  Funny, this apple didn't fall too far from the tree, so I think very much like her.  She does miss me.............we spent every day together for two years and went through a lot together, and that all changed a little over a year ago.  Don't get me wrong, she's very well cared for where she is now, living with my brother, but it's not the same.  She was scared too, and I know she wanted me to know first hand that she had bronchitis and it wasn't congestive heart failure or fluid on the lungs.

As for Mickey not calling any of us...........it's something I actually appreciate.  Her and my Dad raised us with good values and showed us the importance of family.  There was always an open invitation to their home every Sunday for dinner, or any time for that matter.  She also meant what she said, you know where I am, if you need me, call me.  But I must tell you, at one point many years ago, Mickey confided in me that she liked it much better when all of her kids lived in her house under one roof..............then she knew we were okay and didn't have to wonder if we were still working, eating properly or in need of anything.  Some Mom huh!

Earlier I mentioned that if I didn't anything differently at this point, Mickey would think there was something else going on that we weren't telling her about, so it's our regular Thursday with Mickey............just a few more phone calls in between to check up on her.  They usually last just a few minutes.  She tells me she's fine, using her breathing machine, what she had for lunch and dinner and it's back to her movie or TV show.

Thanks for all of the great comments, suggestions and support. I'm sure in no time Mickey will be feeling like her old self and this will all be behind her.  She's a fighter, so a little bronchitis won't keep her down for long.

Hope she's better soon.  As we get older health issues can turn for the worst on a dime.  Take extra good care of her for a while.

There are too many good comments above for me to add much, but I wonder if she wasn't looking for a little reassurance from someone she loves and trusts.  I trust she will be well soon.  Health issues are always scary at any age.

Yes and yes and yes.

Also, I would think she wanted a little laugh out of a serious situation + A reminder of the card game + Some words of encouragement = All shaken; not stir, add a twist and you got it! ; )

Speedy recover to Mickey!

Roger-I think there were many reasons to call, but the most important one is that she just wanted to connect with you. Hope all is well.
