Word Sculpture: Creating an Active Rain Bronze

She's seven years old.  Maybe eight. Grandkids keep changing on you when you're not looking.  Her attention span rivals that of a six week old puppy.

When I blog, I keep Hanna's world view in mind.  For a very short period of time,  she's very focused.  And in that way, Hanna is exactly like you--my Active Rain reader.  And you, in turn, are exactly like the real estate buyer who's clicking away on their keyboard in West Jebip, looking for just the right agent to help them buy just the right house.

So stick with me; the moral of the story just might just make you some money.

When I started my Active Rain ride four short months ago, I wasn't at all sure I could capture your interest and keep it long enough to make you click on my blog.  There's a whole lot of white space on that screen under WYSIWYG!

Hanna lives in NJ, and Saturday morning conversations happen like this:  I'm on one end of the phone.  I want Hanna to carry on a conversation with me.  Hanna, on the other end, is multi-tasking.  One hand holds the phone against her ear. The other holds something good to eat.  Her eyes are glued to the TV, where Hannah Montana is competing for MY time!

You're me.  Your real estate buyer is Hanna.  She'll hang up in a heartbeat.  In the middle of my sentence, I've heard "Okay, Grandpa.  Bye!  I love you."  And she's gone.  I'm talking to dead air.

By the time she was four, I knew that I had to have something interesting to say--on Hanna's level--if we were going to have a conversation.  "Hanna?"  "Guess what!"  "Coyotes were singing on the ramada last night, right under Grandma's window."  "Three of them."  "You're right!  One was the daddy, one was the mommy, and one was the daughter.  Just like you."

It didn't take me long to learn that Active Rain facilitates the story telling, and that interactive blogging keeps the party on the other end from hanging up.

What I didn't know, and have learned to my great satisfaction, is the extent to which you and I become visible to Google and the searching world by effective blogging.  I've learned that if I make you laugh, you'll stay and comment, and that you'll come back. (Go ahead. Click the hippo. You know your want to.)

I've learned about Search Engine Optimization and Organic Blogging, meta tags and pay per click.  I've learned that if I comment on your blog, you'll come look at mine.

It bears repeating (I've said it before on other posts) that the genius of Active Rain is that it rewards reciprocation and interactivity.  Virtual relationships mirror personal and business relationships in this way:  They are either improving or they're deteriorating.  They are never static.

I appreciate you more than I can say.  Your participation in the Active Rain Real Estate Community has grown my business, expanded my mind, and added immeasurably to my resources as a business person.  And all for free.  Thank you so much!  I'm 10% of the way to the Silver Star.  and it's all your fault!

Mike- Great post on what is important not only to capture the reader's attention but to keep the reader engaged and coming back for more. I was so surprised to discover how many Subscribers I had and how many more out in cyberland are reading what I write. So I make it a point to make sure I provide good and effective content. It has netted us millions of dollars worth of listings and buyers, coaching clients and copywriting jobs but more important a window into the souls of wonderful friends I have made here on the rain since the end of June. Mike - I was just telling someone the other day, some of the very best business skills I ever learned I learned in Texas.  It wasn't because they were any smarter about business - it was because they took the time to appreciate the person in the business transaction first.  I'm learning, from reading blogs like yours that the same principles apply.

Great post.  Thanks.  BTW, any idea where I can get my hands on one of those bikini's?

Jackie:  EBay would be my first suggestion, followed by Cabela's.  LOL  Thanks for an excellent comment!

Mike,

As I've come to learn, Relationships are Conversations! And blogging certainly is a medium by which we hold those conversations! I've enjoyed your story and the analogy certainly holds very true!

By the way, the hippo is hilarious!!!

Love it.  Absolutely love it.

Mike, I first logged on to AR in a fog.  I had no idea what it was about, all I knew was that from the first day it held my attention.   Reading and learning from others had me captivated.  Now I've learned that I can participate without fear, and also contribute to my community in a meaningful (hopefully!) way.

Awesome analogy Mike.  Thank you.

Mike, I love your post and will subscribe to you blogs.  I have a question, how do you get the Active Rain logo onto your page?  Is it a link or how do you do it? thanks for sharing your wonderful story.

Mike, truer words have never been spoken. We do need to get on our buyers level and keep them engaged. Also here in the rain, reciprocity is so important....I'm not too funny unlike others so I'll have to work on that.

Mike - you caught my attention (as always) and kept it.  I even clicked on the hippo!

Missy - don't sell yourself short.  Funny isn't everything.  Your blog posts are great!

Mike, you are so wonderful with words. It is so true how much you learn here and how it enriches your life and business. Thank you for always sharing your wisdom with us!

MIKE:  You do a great job selling!  I had to click on the hippo.  You left me no choice.  Very astute observation about what Active Rain is and what we need to do to maximize our efforts here.  Nice job, Mike.

11/15/2007 07:40 AM by Adam Waldman - Long Island REALTORĀ® (RE/MAX Best)

Adam:  Thanks for the attaboy!  Encouragement keeps us all going.  It's a whole lot better than constructive criticism, in my book.

Linda:  It comes from reading.  I have many favorite bloggers on Active Rain, but one will illustrate the point.  Sarah Cooper has a gift with writing so as to draw you into the conversation.  See her latest post, for example.

Nancy: Good!  And thanks for commenting!

Missy:  Listen to Nancy; don't sell yourself short.  You're one of my AR favorites because you engage me with your writing.  Your post a few days ago Time vs Money Organic or Pay-Per-Click? has 103 comments as of this morning.  And why?  Three things:  1. You write relevant content.  2. You present it open-handedly.  3. You write conversationally.  Add that up, and you're fantastic!  Your readers love you!

Georgina:  I think there's a Silver Star group for members with 100,000 points.  Like the Bronze Star group, it's by invitation, but one has only to ask.  There are some great posts there.  Here's a link: The Activerain Silver Star Hall of Fame

Super Aggie Fan Kay:  Thanks for the encouragement!  I'll write a short How I Did That post on adding the link to a post.

Kris:  Thanks so much.  You always write thoughtful comments, and your posts are written the same way.  I'm a subscriber!

Ricardo: I still laugh at that hippo!  Thanks for your comment.

Thanks, Jo!  We have seven grandchildren, and not one lives nearby.  They're all either in Michigan or New Jersey.  Number eight (MI) and number nine (Colorado) have been announced.  There's nothing better in life than grandkids.

Mike, this is a great encouragement to me as I think sometimes my attention span is more like that of a 2 yr old but you do capture your audience quickly with your writing so I even read all the comments and responses on your blog. I was going to ask about the silver star but that was already answered. Thanks

Mike---It is obvious that AR is only a substitute for the time you would rather spend with your granddaughter...Glad that you are able to spend time here and get some business when you cant keep her attention!

Mike - Congrats on working to 50,000. Now that you are a real estate agent too, are you going to set up another profile?

11/16/2007 12:12 AM by Ryan Martin - Bellingham Real Estate Agent (Windermere Real Estate / Whatcom Inc.)

Ryan: Do some people have more than one profile on Active Rain?  I've been a REALTOR since well before joining Active Rain.  See my post REALTORS®: Do Lenders w/ Real Estate Licenses Threaten Your Livelihood? .  My profession is mortgages; the single real estate closing I've ever had involved a buyer who could not qualify for a mortgage to buy a home; I found her a property and arranged a 95% seller carryback at 7%.  The listing agent was thrilled; the 1974 manufactured home had been on the market for a long time, with no prospect in this credit market of moving quickly.  We were paid for the real estate transaction, and did not take a fee for arranging the mortgage.  Thanks for commenting.

Joan: Good nite!

Bill & Barbara Jo:  Thanks for visiting and commenting!

Dale: I sure appreciate your visits to my blog.

Ann: Thanks for the encouragement!

Teri: There's nothing like a grandchild to bring joy to life.  One of mine, having just turned four, snuggled next to me on the couch while her parents, Grandma and I were talking.  "Grandpa," she interrupted, "will you marry me?"  "Honey," I replied, "that would make me SO happy."  "It wouldn't make Grandma happy," she replied.  Teri, thanks for visiting and commenting.

Judy: Telling me that I encourage you is the highest compliment you could give.  Thank you.

Mike - Some members have more than one profile. It is against the ActiveRain rules, but I haven't seen it widely enforced. I will comment about mortgage brokers/bankers with real estate licenses in your other post.

11/16/2007 09:10 AM by Ryan Martin - Bellingham Real Estate Agent (Windermere Real Estate / Whatcom Inc.)

Mike-I liked your analogy of Hanna.....and it's pretty true.....the multi-taskers are hard to pin down :)  I am glad you figured out how to capture the attention and reach this point in your Blogging Journey :) congratulations and see ya up at the next milestone, I'm right behind you :)

Always like reading your blog Mike.  I have close relatives in Tuscon.  They live in Green Valley, which I am told is about 40 miles north of the border.  Interesting how us  Rainers can make friends like this over the internet, and share a common interest in real estate

Thanks

Green Valley is 20 minutes from my home in the Tucson Mountains, Don.  Active Rain has been a Godsend for our business; I have hired one employee and referred two pieces of business through AR, and had two referrals come to me.  I appreciate your comment; come back any time!
