Last night I watched Betty White’s 90th birthday celebration program on NBC. It was a wonderful, enjoyable program and a beautiful tribute to a woman's dedication to her career, her friends, and her philanthropic work.
Has there ever been a time when Betty White wasn't on TV entertaining us all? In the 1970’s it was as Sue Ann Nivens on the Mary Tyler Moore Show, in the late 1980-90’s we enjoyed getting to know Rose Nylen on The Golden Girls, and now as Elka Ostrovsky in Hot in Cleveland.
I feel like Betty White is an old friend although we have never met. She has a very witty sense of humor that has always made me laugh. She never quite crosses the line of bad taste, she just gets close enough to make it funny. Of course, so much of that is her non-verbal communication through the expression on her face with those wonderful dimples!
Her compassion for animals has been well documented throughout the years, as well as her conviction to their well-being. I heard once that she turned down a part in “As Good As It Gets”, because she didn’t agree with the way a small dog was to be treated. That is dedication. That demonstrates conviction. That is an inspiration. That is a perfect example we should all follow.
So, Miss Betty White, I too wish you the happiest birthday of them all and may you have many, many more.
