I Feel Better About our Country's Future... after Shopping at Border's Tonight...

By

I am pleased to say that I had a very exciting (to me, at least) experience tonight.  Today in my email I received my usual weekly set of coupons for Border's Books.

I decided to make the trip over to Border's and browse around.  I actually bought two books... one each from either end of the conservative-liberal spectrum.  The first one was Joel Osteen's Become A Better You.  As you may know, Joel Osteen is the pastor of the 25,000 seat Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas.  I read Joel's first book, Your Best Life Now, and really enjoyed it... and found some meaningful things in it.

The second book I purchased was The Two Marys by Sylvia Browne.  The sub-title of the book is "The Hidden History of Mary the Mother of Jesus, and Mary Magdalene, the "companion" of Jesus."  I am not sure if I could have bought two books further apart from each other on the conservatie-liberal theological spectrum than those two.  I am sure I will enjoy reading them both... and perhaps even do a short book report on them in a week or two.

But... this is only the lead-in for my little story.  I was browsing through the aisles at Borders when I noticed a group of people over in the corner of the store.  It looked like perhaps it was a lecture by some book author doing a book-signing.

I was curious, and walked over to see.  What I saw just filled me with so much hope for the future.  It was a group of tenth graders from the local Colleyville Heritage High School.  It was an AP (advanced placement) high school class on a field-trip or outing of sorts.  They were actually having a class, discussing government, governing philosophies, and politics in general.  I think they meet there on a regular basis.  It was also about 8:00 pm on a Wednesday night.

I was hooked.  Wow, I thought... I need to listen and see what these "kids" have to say.

I must say I came away truly amazed.  There were about thirty kids... they looked like tenth-graders.  I listened... and heard just an amazing discussion, great give-and-take, some truly original and very thought-provoking ideas... all from this incredibly well-read group of fifteen-year-olds.

Their political and governmental views covered a wide spectrum of thought.  Now, this is Texas, remember.  Bush Country.  And once I discovered this was a government/politics/civics type of class... I expected only total conservatism.

What an extreme pleasure it was to hear these articulate fifteen year-olds intelligently and calmly, even though they spoke their opinions with honest emotion... discussing their views.  It was NOTHING like any of the usually rude spectacles usually shown on Fox News or MSNBC.  Honest opinions, genuinely stated... with an emotional fervor... yet low-key, and respectful of each other's views.  I heard more common sense from this group of teenagers than from just about any of the current group of "presidential hopefuls"... either Republicans or Democrats.

Tonight... I Feel So Much Better About The Future Of This Country.  If only these kids were running this country right now !  Honestly and Truly... I was Impressed.  Congratulations Colleyville Heritage High School in Colleyville, Texas.

Karen - I love spending time at bookstores, I'm a self proclaimed book-aholic.  I also go because I get to meet some of the neatest people. I've actually made a true friend or two that I've met at a bookstore.   Like you, I also check out the groups that meet there, I never know when I'll learn something or walk away with another perspective to ponder - my husband calls it 'nosey', my children and I call it, recognizing opportunities.

Like you, I'm also noticing how well read and informed many of today's youth are - certainly not all, but there are a significant number of them.  I've even been educated myself by more than a couple on some key issues because they were able to refer me to sources of information I might not have considered looking at.  I'm hopeful and enthusiastic about what today's youth offer for me, tomorrow's elder.  Great post.  Thanks for stopping in to eaves drop on those "kids" and letting us know of your experience.

Hi Jackie:  Thank you so much for such a great comment.  Yes, I also really enjoy just browsing around bookstores like Borders.  Even though they are part of a chain, they seem to have a decently wider selection than other "chain" bookstores.  I just never know what fun or interesting new things I will stumble upon.

I taught eighth grade for nine years in the late 60's and 70's, and I had some very bright, decently-read and imaginative young teens as students.  I miss the contact, and I really miss their "energy", so when I saw that group at Borders... I pretty much couldn't help myself going over and parking myself close enough to listen to and marvel at their discussion.  I am so glad I did.

Karen Anne - It just goes to prove that you can't put too much stock in all the TV hype. They senssationalize everything. Kids for the most part are more willing to listen to the voice of reason than an adult. Even as very young children fight, if left to figure it out they tend to make amends quickly. Thanks for this positive view of our youth, it is refreshing.

Hopefully, they will carry this willingness to hear others opposing views into adulthood.  Teens rarely get enough credit for their intelligence and thoughtfulnees in the media.  I really enjoyed this story.

What an optamistic post!  I have to say that things have degenerated around NYC in probably the opposite way than in any part of TX.  I knew we hit a new low when there was a doggie sweatshirt with the label "Bush Sucks" on it!  I mean, I'm no fan of Bush, but I have no desire to put this on my dog! I stopped watching the debates because I was so disgusted at the partisan bickering and extremism on both sides.  GREAT POST....Those young people have a great deal to teach ADULTS. Have a good weekend...

Karen Anne, it doesn't surprise me. I've always heard that Colleyville Heritage High was rated high for education. Young people will surprise you sometime with how good they are. I think many adults get too cynical of younger generations, yet they are our next hope for a better future.

Karen Anne,

Thank you for sharing this!  I have several neices and nephews in their teens and early 20's, and I totally agree.  They are coming of age in a world where REAL information is at their fingertips, and they know how to find it.  No longer are people trusting what the news and media spoon-feeds them.  So now they are able to actually learn more than one very biased side of any situation, and then are encouraged to form a rational and informed decision on their own views.  It is incredibly hopeful!  Here's hoping that trend does catch on with our current politicians!

All my best,

Jacki

Hi Judy:  I think kids are more open that most people think.  Sure, some of them do reflect the views of their parents, but if only more of our youth could take part in classes such as those above, I think our country just might have a real chance.  Thanks for visiting...

Bill and Barbara Jo:  Yes, the kids are our future.  We've got to give them more credit than their own parents give them.  If they see us believing in them, it will motivate them to live up to that as a goal.  Thanks for your comment.

Hi Elaine:  Thanks so much.  If you think you enjoyed it from reading it... try and imagine how mesmerized I was listening to it live.  I need to find out if they meet like this on a regular basis.  I want more !

Hi Ruthmarie:  You need to remember that New Yorkers do speak their own language.  Now, this is not a bad thing.  As for the debates, for a while I was enthused by the Democratic debates... they seemed more focused on generating solutions.  Then Edwards and Obama started pulling the same tricks in the primary debates that the Republicans pull in the presidential campaigns... mud slinging !  Obama and Edwards need to cool it... or many Democratic voters will pull back to the sidelines and boycott the elections, too.  These high school tenth-graders spoke so much more intelligently than these supposed "career politicians."  I was so heartened watching them.  Thanks for commenting...

Hi Jackie:  You know, maybe that is the key to what I saw.  If they are interested... most of them are so "able" as far as computers are concerned... that if they want to pursue information on a certain subject... they know where to go to find it... and then they do !

And yes, I hope it's not really a trend that they are caught up in... but that their search for knowledge and their willingness to listen, and perhaps even be open to some of the oppositions ideas... can spur real growth.  I was just so enthused just watching these kids.  Thanks for your comment...

I was involved in a group like this when I was in high school and I have to say that this group all went on to great lives after high school also. The reason I think those kids in that group will also go on to great things is because they won't care what others think of them and can form their own opinions!

They want fall to peer pressures, they will be the one leading the way instead of being a follower!

Hi Gary:  I think watching these tenth graders at Colleyville Heritage... honestly and truly... was something I would much prefer watching than just about anything on television.  It was all so positive... even though there were many sides presented in their conversations.  They were actually listening to each other.  What a concept !.

Hi Todd:  That's one of the reasons why I was so enthused watching these kids.  It wasn't just a group of liberals, or just a group of conservative kids... but a mixed group espousing many facets of perspectives... and they were actually respectfully listening to each other.  So many of their parents... from both isdes of the pollitical spectrum... only gather with others who only believe as they do... so they each just parrot the same stuff back and forth... with no growth or learning about opposing views whatsoever.  Here... the peer pressure was simply to keep learning.  I was so impressed.  Todd, thanks for commenting...

I agree, its gotten ridiculous. On both sides...In any case, we live in a world of form over substance - at least for now.  I can only hope that it gets better.  In the meantime, I'll pass on the doggie sweat shirt....I don't put cloths on my dogs except for the odd bandanna.

Hello, Karen Anne - I've missed you!  'Hope that cold is long gone by now.  It's nice to hear these conversations of young people, before they get all angry.  I can't believe the anger there is in today's political dialogue.  Maybe I was naive, but i just don't remember people being like that 20 years ago.

Hi Margaret:  I've missed you too.  Every few days I get one of your Forus on Crofton emails, and enjoy them.  I finally got myself back working this past Monday.  It was a cold which quickly went into bronchitis and then into bronchial pneumonia.  Lots of antibiotics and chicken soup, but I have been back on my horse for almost a week now.

You are so right.  There is so much anger in the political discourse today.  Even in the primary debates.  They all need to realize it is not about them... but about our country.  You would have been so proud of these high-schoolers.  Extremely knowledgeable, and so articulate.  It was such a treat to be there listening to them.  Colleyville Heritage High School should be proud !  Nice to see you !  Take care...

By the way... over the last four weeks or so... I have barely even thought about my Tomato.  That is another horse I need to get back on.  Once I get my head back full of Tomato stuff, I may call upon you and once again ask your advice.  Thanks so much...
