Too bad that things didn't work out the way that Joe Paterno wanted to go out.  He is one of the 5 best college coaches of all time, ranking up with the best of the best.  Watching sports center this morning and they talk about the influece that he had on all the young men that came through State College under his tutelage.

Sure, he ended with that scandal.  What amazes me is that he and McQueary are the only ones who did anything, but even Joe admitted that he should have done more.  I choose to remember him as a great influencer and a great leader.

The landscape has changed.  Joe Pa is no longer with us, and college football is not as good because of it!

Joe Paterno is a legend and will be remembered as one.  I really hate everything that happened, hind sight is everything.

Hate things went down the way they did.  Saw on the news early this morning Joe is still alive to spite rumors of his death yesterday.

My heart goes out to Mrs. Paterno and her children. Joepa did a lot of good over the years. However, he was also out of touch on this issue and others (like his players' off field behavior). Being out of touch for so long indicated that it was time for Joe to retire many years ago.

Re the scandal, Joe Paterno, like many other people in positions of responsibility either disbelieved their good friend or confidante could ever do something so wrong or possibly believed that when found out, the friend could just stop. Who knows how many children were affected and how many lives were ruined?

Was he alone in this? Absolutely not. However, our loss of innocence on pedophilia began decades ago. This is not a new issue. Finally, every person who works with children in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is a mandated reporter. The largest responsibility here belongs to the University, who should have trained all university employees better. Weighing their affection for Sandusky and Paterno vs their fear of losing their job might have encouraged McQeery to take it farther and the university police to report it further.

In the end, the legend of the man who dedicated his life to Penn State University and its students and personally gave and raised millions, helping a small ag school to become a major university and an athletic powerhouse has been tarnished.

??? I just read that Joe Paterno died.  I read this on Google after reading a couple AR posts.  I am so sorry to hear this.  Now I'm reading comments that it was all a rumar.  Well, I love Joe and what he did for Penn State. I'm saddened by his death, if he did indeed pass.

Larry,  @John is correct.  A lot of huge media outlets are trying to get the egg off their face with this one.  Mr. Pantero is alive...though not doing well.

Wait a minute, I read that Mr. Paterno is indeed dead.  For real this time.

RIP ...

And I agree with you, Bettag.

...and, it is real this time.  Sad.  I agree with you, Larry, it seems to me that the man did what he should have done.  He did not do the coverup, his superiors did.  Hope he is remembered for what he did, not what others did!

Amen a sad day and a person who will most likely never be passed on some of his historic records. My hart goes out to his family and all of Pennsylvania and those who love football.

Its a sad day

Cindy...this final incident will not be his legacy.  His legacy will be his leadership.

John...agreed.

Anne...I have a master's in clinical psych and counseled victims of parental rape and molestation.  While what you say has a lot of elements of truth to it, Joe Paterno was not the perpetrator.  As he said, he wished he did more.  We've all failed...probably fail to some extent every day in life.  I was not in Joe's shoes, but he did report the incident.  He said he should have done more.  As he was not the pedophile, I have a difficult time believing that this will be his legacy.  The atrocity is horrible...let's make that clear.  Joe, however was not the perpetrator.  Let's make that clear as well.  If what is alleged about Sandusky is true, he needs to be prosecuted and punished in accordance with the laws.  Joe was a great man and I hope that his legacy continues to inspire young men.  I hope that people can also learn from his mistakes....

Cindy...again...agreed!

Deb....family has released a statement per the media.

Jason...always great to hear from you!

Bruce...thanks

Deborah....agreed!

Dave.....thanks dude!
