I returned from the NAR Conference in Vegas today. The conference as a whole was as expected, a lot of affiliates trying to sell you anything and everything. But the bright point to the conference was the classes that I took towards my CIPS(Certified International Property Specialists) Certification. I have 4 more classes to take over the next year. The overall objective of this course is to introduce real estate professionals to the basic skills and knowledge necessary to facilitate international real estate transactions. In particular, the course is designed to create an awareness of:

* Diversity and inclusive real estate practices

* Fair Housing Act and its effect on marketing and selling practices

* Globalization of economics

* International capital flow

* Effects of currency exchange on transactions

* Basic principles and trends in international investment

* Cross-cultural relationships

* U.S. regulation of inbound investments

* Roles and expectations in international transactions

I look forward to continuing my education and becoming your go to REALTOR for doing business out of the country. DG>

My broker has his cips certification.  He has travelled to many different countries including a recent trip to Greece where a lot of Americans are purchasing vacation homes.  What an experience!

Dustin-

good idea-- interantional buyers and investors will continue to grow as a percentage of our business as long as the dollar is weak and i personally don not see much hope for a big turnaround there.  I wonder if more realtors will end up learning more basic second and third language skill in the near future--makes sense-- parlez vous francais?

Thank you everyone for chiming in on this topic. I agree with all the comments the designation is a great idea, but with all designations and titles its what you do with it that really counts. Douglas, you are right on with your comments, realtors, developers, owners.... will have to continue to find new and creative ways in order to make there products more visable to international buyers. Depending on the area, I think many realtors will begin to take in second languages. Here in AZ, many of our schools starting as early as pre-school are teaching spanish. It is becoming expected in order to make it through a day here. With all that is going on in countries such as Venezuala, many spanish speaking people are looking to get there money out and into a much more stable market. Even if returns are not that great right now it is much safer to get into a blue chip market than to stay in a very volitale market. DG>

You posted this about a year ago.  I am foreign born and want to take advantage of speaking other languages and knowing the culture to work with foreign buyers.  Have you found the CIPS certification helped you to find clients?
