Parents As Teachers

One of my most memorable clients, Mary Lynn Skiles, was introduced to me at the very beginning of my career in real estate.  She was an educator for many years and played a central role in the creation of early-childhood programs in public schools, specifically Parents As Teachers.  She was my go-to person when I had questions about schools from concerned families.  This was way before we could get the information that is now available on the internet.

When called upon Mary Lynn would offer specifics about a school district but she always stressed this timeless piece of advice:  Always look at the school as it relates to YOUR children and the type of education and environment you as parents want for your children.  Visit the schools and take a look for yourself.  Statistics are not the only criteria.

Her passion of course was Parents As Teachers which was in it's infancy when we met.  Today as I read the current  core values of the Parents As Teachers Logic Model, I recognized the words of wisdom from Mary Lynn to me:

>The early years of a child’s life are critical for
optimal development and provide the foundation
for success in school and in life.
> Parents are their children’s first and most
influential teachers.
> Established and emerging research is the
foundation of our curriculua, training, materials
and services.
> All young children and their families deserve
the same opportunities to succeed, regardless
of any demographic, geographic, or economic
considerations.
> An understanding and appreciation of the history
and traditions of diverse cultures is essential in
serving families.
Parents As Teachers offers personal visits for families throughout pregnancy until the child enters kindergarten.  Personal visits are the heart of the program.  A parent educator knowledgeable about child development and brain research on early learning helps you understand what to expect as your child grows and offers practical suggestions on encouraging learning and managing challenging behavior.

Parents As Teachers is school district specific.  It is an excellent resource.  Here are the locations in Missouri.  If you are thinking about starting a family or already have some pre-schoolers, checking its availability in the school districts you are considering could be valuable.  There is also a Parents as Teachers National located in St. Louis at 314-432-4330.
