I was memed by Carole Cohen

When I found out about being memed  I thought what in the world could I tell people about myself that would be interesting and they might not already know about. With two profiles, one as a real estate agent and one as a real estate trainer, here on Active Rain I figure everything is pretty well out there.
I'm going to have to combine those profiles somehow because I'm starting to feel a little schizo with 2 Me's running around.

So I dug deep.

1. I arrived in the United States when I was 5 years old after a week and half at sea...it wasn't pleasant. I remember leaving the big ship and walking along this long drab tunnel with what seemed like thousands of other people...my mom tightly clasping my hand pulling me along.

I was afraid because I could hear crying up ahead and there were lots of people in line ahead of us.  As we got closer to the end of the line I could see this huge ugly woman dressed in white with a funny white cap on and this small guy in a wrinkly suit next to her...he held this god awful huge shiny needle in his hand and I tried to pull away when I saw it but my parents wouldn't let me.

The big woman grabbed my arm and wiped it with this cold stuff and the little man, before I could even push at the woman, stuck the huge needle in my arm...man did it hurt and I cried..screamed is probably more like it. Welcome to the United States of America. I became a citizen in 1986 and was proudly sworn in during a huge ceremony held in Concord NH.

2. I always liked being active and helping people so in the mid 80's I became one of the first female volunteer firefighters in my town. It was an interesting time in my life as female fire fighters were not embraced by any stretch of the imagination.

I learned a lot about people, their characters, inner strength and small town politics. I went on to become a certified EMT but eventually the things I saw became too hard to bear and that along with family demands my life took another path.

 3. I married my soul mate...we met on an MLS caravan...I was standing up on the second floor open balcony of this beautiful house looking down at all the REALTORS when suddenly the new guy on the block walked through the door.

I had heard about him as his dad was a well known broker in our area...so when Joe McGillicuddy's son Jay arrived on the REALTOR® scene everyone knew about it.

I stood there and saw him walk in and at the same time he looked up saw me and somehow our eyes locked and the rest is history.

4. Jack Kemp when he was the czar of housing planted a big kiss on me. He came and spoke at our state convention and I thought he was pretty hot looking for an older guy...LOL...so I made my way up to him, I was wearing a red power suit and I was hoping he'd notice me. He did and he kissed me...wow. I told every one who would listen to me, that he kissed me and that I was never going to wash my face again. LOL I thought it was a pretty big deal but no one else did!

5. Even though I am on "stage" often as I travel about teaching and conducting workshops I am very shy and struggle with it daily. I have a hard time walking into a crowded room and talking with people...or being at a party full of people..even if I know all of them I still struggle with it. Once I'm out of my shell I'm fine and most people have no clue that I am shy and wouldn't believe it even if I told them.

This is fun!!!

Monika - I felt deep inside that you were shy....just knew it.  And I remember Jack Kemp at our convention, too.  I got Christmas cards from him and Phil Graham for several years after that. I remember the football pass he threw, too, in that ballroom.  Remember that?

Great reading your 5 things!

Hi Monika, on your points.. #1.. I can feel your pain with that big needle headed towards you.. Bad Nurse!!
#2 Fire Fire.. just kidding. very commendable... you go Miss Firefighter!  #3.. I'm so happy for both of you! and on #5.. I can relate. I'm the same way. I prefer to people watch and tend not to mingle too much.

thanks for sharing!!!

Ann...Funny how you sensed my shyness! Yeah I remember that pass in the ball room...pretty neat!

Nick...Thanks for reading my long Memed blog. I don't think I'll ever forget that feeling walking down that hallway...scary!  I prefer the people watching and usually pick up on things that others miss...that is one benefit of being shy I guess.

Thanks for reading!

I'm a huge Jack Kemp fan, both the football player and the politician (thought they are one and the same).

Monika - I'm with you on the people watching!  I'm really very shy...when I was younger, I would end up almost paralyzed with shyness.  I could never walk into a room of people and just start talking to them.  I'd much rather hang out in the back of the room, with YOU.  ;-)

Moni I finally found your post! This has been a hard journey; I should have asked you in an email! lolol (I couldn't get the link you provided to work). Anyway, it was well worth the wait - you had me tensely awaiting that needle. Congratulations on your citizenship! Now the 'eyes locking part' is right out of West Side Story lolol.  You two are so cute.  And the best one was the divulge about being a firefighter. I am so proud of you for ground breaking!  xxx

Carole..Thanks for reading. I didn't know you had a hard time finding me...LOL.  I don't think I'll ever forget that day when I saw Jay for the first time...it was very romantic as neither one of us knew what hit us. It was so unexpected.

Karen...I was born in Germany..not to far away from where Jay was born...funny we both traveled so far in our early years and then found each other in real estate an ocean away from where we stated our lives.  Someday we're going to go back...he to find his roots and me to embrace my extended family.

Thanks for reading my meme :)

Monika, what a nice meme you wrote. Something else we have in common... I just met my soul mate recently, we recognized each other the second we met. So nice to hear you met yours as well. This meme thing was such a nice way to get to know everyone. Thanks for memeing me.

Thanks Marti,

Funny how that happens and how you recognize that something important just happened.  Jay and I were in a huge crowd but suddenly...I know this sounds mushy but suddenly we were pretty well alone in that room.

Nice Meme Monika.  Reads like a short story from beginning to end.  The volunteer fire fighter is not for everyone.  For some it's great for a short time to make that contribution and time commitment.  For others, it's not.  I'm sure you were a great person to partner with on a call.

It looks like you married an elf, Monika.  I ADORE that pic with the big hair bow.  I wish little girls still wore them.  Well, they do in Ukraine, but that is not what I meant.

I wore hair bows nearly everyday until about 15 years ago when we had a very famous murder case... Pamela Smart... she slept with some teenage students and they conspired to kill her husband...anyway the case was televised live on TV everyday and she wore bows..all the time. Drove me nuts and I finally put mine away.

Thanks for reading my meme Maureen. Have a Merry Christmas!!!

Great story Monika:

You're right about the fire service.  It's still tough on women but the women are tough.  I've been in fires and on rescue missions with both (male and female).  Women are committed and there are a lot more now than before and a lot more coming on board.  There's a lot to contribute and if you were the first FF then you know how difficult it was to step up (even to a higher level then some men).

Thanks for sharing.
