Chinese New Year January 23, 2012

Today is the start of the new year. The Chinese New Year. It reminds me of the days when I would get dressed in my cheong sam and celebrate with family. We would eat all day.

Eat for prosperity and good health and the responsible adults would light foreworks. Later that day we would go to a Chinese retaurant with the Tom Society and celebrate. Great memories.

I was very blessed as a child that my parents and grandparents instilled celebrating the Chinese New Year which is a rich, cultural tradition in Hawai'i... especially if you are Chinese :)

This year is the Year of the Dragon!

I do not write about it too much but I am Cantonese from both of my parents. My surnames are Lum, Ah Mong/Among, and Ah Hoy Tam.

Today reminds of days when my family would have gau ready for us to eat and give us Lai See filled with money.

Today I celebrate it in Florida by wearing red while I work and by eating to my hearts content.

Here is to wishing everyone Kung Hee Fat Choy! Happy New Year!

I wouldn't mind an envelope filled with money right now. Happy new year Lana, you are lucky to have had parents who instilled a love of culture in you. It makes life much more interesting.
