Safeway or the Highway!

Safeway MarinThis is probably not news to many, but I noticed recently that local Safeway stores have begun charging customers for bags at checkout.  Just like check-in at the airport, you are now required to input how many bags you'll need, and you are charged accordingly.  All I can say is, "It's about time!"

When I look back at my childhood (in the '70's) I can certainly note the vast progress that has been made in awareness and resourcefulness when it comes to re-use and recycling.  There is still so much more that can be accomplished.  Do you remember the days when people would just throw bottles and cans in the trash?  Now, when I see that happen I almost wince in pain.  How about those first plastic shopping bags --- the ones as thick as the paper bags?  Now they're so thin you can see through them and they're many times as strong.

Marin SafewayI hope that ten years down the road we are looking back at this era and cringing all over, having come to a new realization and definition of resourcefulness.

Habits change slowly, but the transformation is sped when it's tied to money.  Safeway should be recognized for taking this step and working to influence the behavior of their customers in a responsible manner.

Rob - Safeway is leading the pack, and others are sure to follow.  I still have my first reusable shopping bag, it's an old macrame French bag from the 70s...I still take it to farmer's markets and I never go to the local market without my stash of reusable bags.  The plastic bags I haven't used could probably stretch across most of Los Angeles.  ;)

Rob -  AGREED!  Whole Foods did away with plastic bags a long time ago and there are towns that charge a tax on the use of these bags.  King Soopers (Kroger) now has t-shirt bag recycle boxes in their lobbies.  My wife collects these things in a drawer that gets stuffed to the gills.  I emptied it the other day and took all the used bags to the recycle bin.  For even such a small gesture, I felt a lot better.  Thanks for the post!
