There are many people in my area struggling to survive. While this has been a fairly mild winter, there are still issues with which to deal.
When you have kids, there are all those notes from school needing money for this and that.
And, even if you don’t have kids, there is the mortgage or rent, heating bills, car payments (likely), insurance, and food.
There is a place that can help with food. Second Harvest Heartland is a very well-respected and nurturing place to help out, and one doesn’t need to apply for “food stamps” to use it.
Second Harvest Heartland works to reinvent hunger relief through leadership and innovation. As the Upper Midwest’s largest hunger relief organization, our goal is not only to help our hungry neighbors today, but to provide the means for everyone to be fed tomorrow. We're known for distributing great amounts of food quickly and efficiently; in 2011 alone, we collected, warehoused and distributed more than 70 million pounds of food—but we’re also constantly pioneering ways to reduce waste and better use the abundant resources available in this land of plenty.
Second Harvest Heartland is a member of Feeding America, a national network of more than 200 food banks serving every state in the United States. Membership means access to millions of pounds of surplus food and grocery donations from manufacturers and producers throughout the country.
Working with our network of partners, volunteers and donors as well as people like you, our 86,300 square feet of dry, refrigerator and freezer space is constantly accepting and distributing donations. Our fleet of trucks travels nearly half a million miles a year, picking up food donations and delivering them to local food shelves, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, senior community centers and children's after school programs.

I have volunteered many times for their Fare for All program and even purchased several of their “Holiday Packs.” They are a tremendous value for the money.
There is no shame in taking advantage of these programs. Remember, there are many volunteers working here that just want to make life a little easier for our friends and neighbors who need a little extra help.
So make a call today, or stop by one of the outlets. It is great food at a very reasonable cost. And, if you are on Food Stamps, they take those, too.
Happy Eating!
