Get to know meme

Mary McKnight recently introduced all of us to the blogging phenomenon of memes. She explained that "it's a thought stream carried from one person to another ... the blogging equivalent of a chain letter ... sort of a social game to build community and engender relationships."

In a brilliant stroke of genius after his amazing feat of 428 comments in a day, Jay Thompson started the ActiveRain Meme which gives him a chance to recover while the rest of us play tag in the blogosphere. Jay asked for five items about us, and then for us to 'tag' three more people.

It didn't take long before I was tagged by Kristal Kraft and Laura Monroe. Here are five items to help you 'Get to know meme'.

  1. I have a playful and competitive side that likes to test rules and boundaries and go outside the lines, so my list of five things will probably end up being eight or nine.

  2. Somewhere around five years old I started playing piano. UNLV gave me a music scholarship which helped me eventually earn a degree in Finance. I've played with Woody Herman, the UNLV Jazz Ensemble, the UNLV Pep Band at Runnin' Rebel games in the 80's, on a Mississippi river boat, and with a Las Vegas cover band downtown that was televised on Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve.

  3. I was the president of my fraternity at UNLV (Tau Kappa Epsilon) and president of our alumni association. That would account for me taking a little longer than four years to finish my degree! My nickname was Schroeder (from Peanuts).

  4. Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine interviewed me for a cover story in November, 1996 about investing. (That's where the picture is from.) The reported emailed me after reading some of my posts online about dividend reinvestment. Even ten years ago the web was helping to make contacts!

  5. I hit a home run on the ESPN sports trivia show The Dream League to help my team win the grand prize. That was a really fun show - a combination of answering trivia questions and completing mini-challenges in football, basketball, softball and golf.

  6. Prior to real estate, I was an assistant to a stockbroker (and had my series 7 and 63 licenses), and the Ticket Operations Manager for the Las Vegas Stars, the AAA team for the San Diego Padres. If I was not in real estate today, I'd like to work in music or architecture.

  7. Some of my goals for 2007: to generate at least twelve transactions from the web, to get back into league tennis, to find my Yawp (shameless blog plug, but worth a visit and fun to say ... YAWP!)

  8. The calendar on my fridge still says November and I haven't mailed my Christmas cards yet!

I'm tagging -- Francy ThompsonDerek Wagner, Ginger and Roger Sala ... and Gary Keller and Dave Jenks (authors of The Millionaire Real Estate Agent) ... If you're going to meme, meme big! (Interesting side note - I Googled "Gary Keller real estate blog" to see if there was already something online and the first result was my blog on ActiveRain!)

John.... looks like I am early to the party. Looks like you have done some successful things. I liked the comment in regards to why it took you longer than 4 yrs to finish school. But I am sure that you weren't the only one that did this.   ;o)

In regards to ESPN and the dream league. I enjoyed that and I liked when they had all of those people try out for the 2 spots on ESPN.

Overall.... thanks for sharing this.

Carole - Thanks! Having written this I've learned that looking back can give us a great perspective on moving forward. Going to do some business pics in 2007, and maybe a few more like this for the web. My calendar is up to date now, just need to finish the cards!

Jeff - Good to see you. It's not so much how long it takes to get your degree as it is the experiences you have along the way and how you apply it later in life. You're thinking of Dream Job, a more recent show. The Dream League was on in the early 90's for only one or two seasons and was filmed at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas.

Chris - And as you can see from the pic I'm left-handed. That's a big advantage at the club level because so many players aren't used to the opposite spin. Some don't realize it until halfway through the first set!

John....... yes, the "Dream Job"   I did like that one and I can't say I remembered the dream league.  oh well....

in regards to the school thing. I agree.....   but my parents weren't too happy that it took me longer. But why should they have cared, it was my money, not theirs. It was my freshman year, but I didn't do so well. I actually wrote about that in my meme. Check it out...

Laura - Thanks for tagging me! I put the tennis pic out there for accountability ... now that it's on the Rain I've got to follow through and get back on the court. Hmm, another benefit of working with a VA - more time to play!

Jeff - College presents a whole new group of relationships along with the academic challenges. The important thing is that you followed through.

Jay - Thanks for your comment! My leadership comes from a combination of creativity and impatience. I always have a lot of ideas, and once I'm committed to something I like to get started yesterday and go full throttle. Sports provides a good break for me, it's like active relaxation.

You are quite the well-rounded person there, John. What's next? Yodeling lessons in the Alps? Semi-Professional Gondola racing in Venice? Becoming a world-renowned bee keeper?

Well, you obviously like to live large. Right on!
