Lola the baby elephant helped me learn something: Elephants grieve just like we do.

Lola passed away from a blood clot embolism in her heart. She was supposed to have surgery but obviously didn't make it that far. Lola was three months old.

When you look at the photo to the right, you can see the grief in the elephants' eyes. The mood is one of somber and loss. Elephants normally look like they are happy but in this photo you know the sadness is there.

When us humans lose someone we love and care deeply about, it shows in our eyes and faces. Grieving is a long process and I wonder if it's the same with elephants? Lola's Mom is 22 years old. Will she feel the effects of losing her baby for as long as she lives like we would? I guess time will tell.

Thank you Lola for teaching me that elephants are people too! Rest In Peace little girl.

Elephants are so cool, family oriented and on occasions smarter than humans, our friend was just out in Asia for 6 months at the elephant retirement preserve, a life changing experience.

This made me very sad too. Far too young to be taken.

I had an amazing day in Thailand with elephants. The tough part was that the trainers were so terriblly cruel to them.

Jackie  We regularly see evidence of grief in nature.  We had a male cardinal hit a cat window and die.  The female sat in a nearby tree waiting for him to get up

Jackie - How heartbreaking, just the way they are standing you can tell how sad they are.

Hi Ellie, Being cruel to them is never a good thing. Elephants have excellent memories and this is why every now and then we hear about one attacking a trainer. What do they expect?

Hi Karen, Even birds grieve. Nature is amazing!

Hi Michelle, I know. You can feel what they are feeling in that photo.
