Socially Acceptable Spelling Mistakes?

My son posted a funny comment on Facebook the other day....have to give credit where credit is due.(For all I know, he saw this somewhere else.) He said that when one notices a spelling mistake to check the keys on the keyboard to determine if the mistake was "socially acceptable."

The premise is that if the keys are next to each other on the keyboard, then we have made a reasonable error.

For instance I posted last night:

" What a god day....long run, kayaking in the sun, 1 1/2 hour massage. Now? hydrate, hot water bottle, tea and a good night's sleep."

Ok, ok...don't get lost in the great day I had. It's wasn't a "god" day....no church you see...it was a "GOOD" day. But socially acceptable, according to my son, since I just missed an "o" in the post.

So on top of the great day I had....my spelling error was also forgiven due to my clear relaxation mode, and the proximity of the error. I mean really, how much closer could an "o" come to another "o"? Maybe tonight I need to ponder that with a good (or god) Pinot.

I think a mistake is forgive-able!  However, when the post is loaded with errors... ouch!

Karen- I'd never heard that one but will have to think about it.  Sounds to me like you had a go(o)d day no matter how it was spelled.

I think that is forgiveable but not sure who came up with the rule. We all make mistakes. I often found my brain is faster than my typing.

Karen, I am teaching my son to proof his work, have we forgotten how to do this?

I don't like to see any mistakes, to me it shows that people don't proof read their postings. Both of my parents were teachers, and would have a fit to see something pass just because we have become lazy as a society. I laugh a lot and half a great sense of humor, but I don't think printing mistakes is professional funny or acceptable.

The only time that I may be slightly annoyed with spelling errors....is when they mis-spell a word that is in the title to their post.  Is that too much to ask?  :)

No wonder people cannot spell, it is "Socially Acceptable" if you don't know how to spell a word.

Hey the younger set has a differnet set of rules....just like we did when we were their age.  Gotta love it!  And yes I spelled that like I wanted to.  Karen....you surely had a God day!  What a great kid you have!  I like him!

Oh My Good!  You are right.  It's always about proximity isn't it?  ;-)

A little mistake like that is something I just read through and move on.  As long as I get the point of a person's FB update, I leave the grammar check alone.

Liz: I totally agree....or worse when they don't bother to use capital letters. :)

Kathy: I really did!

Larry: I'm not sure I see your poynt :)

Mike: My brain is always faster than my typing, and sometimes faster than my mouth.

Dave: Spell check doesn't check usage, though...and I've breezed over misspelled words simply by not reading carefully once I've spell checked. That small red line is hard to see sometimes.

Chris: yes so many have. I'm with you on this...it really is amazing

Winston: I can't even end a sentence with a preposition...my son isn't quite sure what a preposition is.

Karen: Oh I've had to copy my title and run spell check...just to make sure.

Ted: Wouldn't want to hurt any feelings over a misspelled word, now would we?

Anna: Oh they sure do....he's the new lawyer, uh oh.

Cameron: Oh, god one!

Bryan: FB isn't such a big deal...we tend to move quickly when we post for fun, but blog posts and such for business? Oh...I think it shows a lot about someone's attention to detail

Karen -- recently had an email come in, could not figure out what they were trying to say, until someone pointed out that their one hand was one key out of position, so every letter from that side of the keyboard was one letter out of sync.  I know what you mean about ending sentences with prepositions, though I sometimes do it, because I don't want to go back and re-cast the sentence.

I think this rule is next to the 10 second rule - if your food dropped on the floor and it was on the floor for less than 10 seconds, then it's okay to eat! :-)

Karen, don't you just love when kids have an explanation for something, e.g. socially acceptable spelling mistake, you didn't even know existed?

And with Twitter, everything is abbreviated on purpose!  You just have to decipher the "socially acceptable" abbreviated words!
