The topic of cold rooms and cold floors comes up most often in winter months, and also when talking about basements. Every floor and room is different pending on how the room is used, how the floor is heated, whether w
ater/moisture is an issue, whether the floor is level and smooth, as well as budget, but here are a few trends and solutions I'm seeing:
1. Radiant heated flooring/heated floors - Radiant heat flooring is the hot trend and provides luxurious comfort to your feet. While radiant heat flooring is most popular under tile, it can also work with some hardwoods, cork, laminate and now even under carpeting.
2. Cork flooring - Cork flooring is environmentally friendly and has a soft and warm feel. And, due to the air pockets in cork, it provides some added insulation for a double win.
3. Foam board insulation underneath the flooring - These 1/4" boards provide an extra layer of protection and have much higher "r" values vs. a cork underlayment. They can be used in isolation or in conjunction with radiant heat flooring. When they are used with radiant heat flooring, the floors heat up much faster and reduce energy bills.
4. Carpeting or area rugs - Nothing beats the comfort and warm of carpet on your feet. Even when you have a hard surface, area rugs can give the room some more warmth - both temperature wise and visually.
