A common item I call out on older pools is the old drain covers.  People don't realize just how strong the suction can be at a pool drain.  It is enough that if someone touches it they may not be able to move their hand, or if someone with long hair swims by it their hair can get tangled and thus trap the person.  So I always recommend replacing the old grate style drain covers with a new anti-vortex cover to promote safety.  Stay safe out there.

This cover was not only old, it was loose.  That's a real danger.

There was a very horrible story this summer where a kid got stuck on a drain and it actually pulled some of their insides out....really.  Ugh....everyone with a pool needs to take a look at their drains and get outdated ones replaced!!

John and Eric, I wish everyone realized what a threat it truly is.  I do my best to get the word out.

Replace your drain immediately I don't care what you think you should do, I'm telling you right now to replace that busted up drain cover A.S.A.P. That is a huge threat, peoples insides can get sucked out, and people will drown. Out of so many people that get caught in broken or missing drains only 4% are saved. The drain can cause up to 350 or more pounds of pressure on the person drowning. Also there is a story at a high school graduate party a 16 year old girl got caught in a hot tub drain and 6-8 large male adults could not pull her out. Just replace that drain cover immediately.

All The Best,

Paul

Joseph - Excellent safety post.  It never occurred to me that this could be so potentially dangerous.  Thanks!
