Want to Sharpen Your Mind? Drop a Few Pounds

As we approach the end of January, some of us are still carrying the burden of the extra pounds we gained over the holidays.  I noticed this article on CNN that might offer the needed incentive to lose the weight now.

“Losing weight comes with a host of health benefits — including making your brain sharper.

Yes, it turns out that in addition to being bad for your heart, carrying excess weight may impair cognitive functions such as memory and attention. Losing weight, therefore, may help improve these mental functions, according to new research led by John Gunstad, assistant professor of psychology at Kent State University, and reported in the journal Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases.” @AlicePark

A growing body of evidence suggests that obesity is linked to cognitive deficits, and it is a known risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and stroke.”  @AlicePark

Good luck with the dieting.  Add a daily walk to your schedule to the added benefits provided by exercise.

Be sure to have your camera in hand to capture those special moments when you are out and about in your community or your travels.

A very true statement, and one I have always agreed with. I need to lose a few, but because I need to lose a few, my mind is not sharp enough to grasp that concept. Or maybe I just have terrible will power!

Roy that is excellent advice and I believe it to be true. Unfortunately, when most people begin a diet, they go through a "foggy brain" process until the "sharpness" finally kicks in - I think too many people give up before the reward of clarity.

Wow Roy, I knew excess weight was bad for your heart, but didn't know it could effect your cognitive function. My short term memory isn't what it used to be so now I have more incentive to keep my weight down! BTW - love your flower and butterfly photos on Pinterest! I'm of course "following" you! Have a great weekend!

Good to hear from you, Kristine. Thanks for the beautiful photograph.

I guess there will be Pinterest group on ActiveRain.  It will be interesting to learn how to effectively use Pinterest in our marketing efforts.

I can attest to using this method to sharpen the mind.  I remember a few years ago, I went on an wonderful extended vacation.  I put on several pounds while away.  When I arrived home, I was like a toad on Ritalin:-)  I noticed that when I got back into swimming, which is my exercise of choice, I would emerge from the mental fog. and my thoughts were a little swifter than before.

It is sometimes good to revisit old blogs and reblogs. We might even find some good ideas for new blogs.
