A glimpse of the past. Check writing for the missus....

This was found by a banker member of the family when going through old items left behind.  He chuckled and handed it to me.

Old check Security Bank

Notice the check was signed with "by wife" underneath the name.  It was also "for rent" and was check No 2.  The banker member of the family thought it was somewhat amusing that the check was sent through with that signature and indicated that he doubted that it would be possible to do that today.

It just dates back to a time when the writer had perfected handwriting, the town was small, the bank was small enough to know everyone and everyone's relatives and there was trust.  It was 1943.

Barbara, how often do we see old check drafts, especially from 1943? It was certainly a different time and way of doing things. No way would that fly today!

I love your final statement Ms. B...beautiful remark regarding 1943.  Luke was sitting in the truck the other day and just out of the blue made the statement, "I wish I lived in a different time."  Nothing that many of us haven't said at one time or another but I was in shock with the explaination.  "I would like to live in a time when you could wear dress clothes all the time and not be considered weird."  When he was asked what time that would be one of his choices was in the 1940's.

It sort of makes me wonder what folks will say about our time in 70 to 75 years?

Barbara, so true----I don't think any bank would let that fly today.  Pretty interesting.

Pamela, you are right.

Alan, cheap rent, wasn't it?

Debbie, that Little Luke is a thinker...and that is a compliment to him.  Wonder what people will think of the pants guys wear now where the seat hangs down to their knees?  I still want an explanation of how they keep them up and are they made to look that way?  It has to be the ugliest and least sensible fashion ever.  Tell Little Luke to explain them to me.  And hopefully, he does not wear them.

Charles, unfortunately, today's banker might have to ask "which wife?"

Debbie:  I hope the folks will be appalled and shocked at the sloppy way "we' dress today.  I am mortified when I see some folks out in public....pants about to fall off, no regard or respect as to where they are. ( Mostly) men wearing those caps inside, esp. in a restaurant.  I'd better not get started.  Tell Luke to hang in there, and wear nice, clean dress up clothes anywhere he wants to.  Tell him: at the high school where my husband once taught (Oak Park, Illinois) a teacher gave an extra point on the final exam if a student came to class dressed nicely (as in Sunday clothes).....and one boy even went in a tuxedo.  I think the teacher gave him 2 extra points.

At least Winnie was honest enough to sign her name under Vernon's signature....I've learned to sign my husband's name...and noone is the wiser. I think I could have been a forger in another life.

Anita, that is excellent advice that you gave Little Luke.  The falling pants thing is the very worst, in my opinion. Don't be surprised if trouble comes knocking on your door now that you have confessed to forgery!  LOL

Today that signature wouldn't be a problem since husband and wife usually have joint bank accounts.

I have doubts that signatures mean that much anymore. Are they really checked. I guess in the case of a forgery, an unauthorized signature might be rejected by the court.

I have fun scribbling with my fingernail on the electronic readers for charge cards in my grocery store. No signature is the same.

It is certainly refreshing to hear Luke talk about wearing nice clothes. However, I do like my comfort clothes.

Debbie, Little Luke might have just had a thought transfer with this Luke, because it's a thought that goes through his head almost every day.

So, $25 for rent, eh? Doesn't sound too bad. Let's check up on the old currency convertor...

Hmm...

About $326 in today's dollars. Actually, that's pretty good! You wouldn't be able to find a decent apartment for that in Searcy, let alone Little Rock. Unless you knew somebody.

Yes, I think you are right Mr. Don about signatures only being a mater after the fact.  I have signed 3 letters of my name and got to talking, never finishing the signature and they went through.  I think it makes a difference if you were making an unusual purchase.  I know we got a call while traveling out of state wanting to know if it was us using our card.  It wasn't a usual purchase for us.

Ms. Anita - I will pass on your approval.  Believe it or not, he will be excited!

Ms. Barbara - Sad, but I'm the casual one of the family.  I love my denim and cotton comfort.  It took us years, sounds weird, just to get that little fellow to go with his shirt untucked.  He would worry and work all across the parking lot just trying to keep his little shirts tucked in right.  He really liked wearing a belt and always ears an undershrit too, even when it is too hot.  I don't think we could afford to keep him in dress clothes the way he plays or maybe they just need to make better dress clothes like they did back then.  Dress clothes for children are almost disposable in quality. His biggest fuss is that they don't always have inside pockets.  Don't they know that ALL male dress clothes should have INSIDE POCKETS?  You and I know that they would be filled with rocks or some other gross, I mean, GREAT treasure.  Luke has the fedora ready!  Smiles.

I have to respond to the baggy britches.  None of my crew like them but we have had several visit that do like that style.  One young man wore several layers just so that he could enjoy the baggy look.  We had a young man priss across in front of the house with that look...you know...like he didn't make it...we were out on the porch and naturally watched him pass.  I couldn't help but almost choke on my tea when, drop went the draws her he fell over like he was ready to get a spanking.  He got up mad, like someone had pushed him but he was all alone.  I should have thought he would have been embarrassed.  I guess that is old fashioned too.

New song - sure to be a hit ( to the tune, Do your ears hang low?):  Dooooo your pants hang low?  Do they wiggle to and fro?  You could stuff them with a pillow your could tie them with a rope?  Youuuuu could pull them to your shoulders like a clown in the circus.  Do your pants hang low?

Don, I think you are right with all those assumptions.  Dressing up is still nice from time to time.  There was a Snowflake Ball at Searcy Country Club Saturday night and those dads looked very nice in their suits and ties.  Moms were not allowed;  just dads and daughters.  We were not a part of the party but observed.

Luke, not only would dressing nice be desirable but also the handwriting needs to be readable.  This lady had perfected her cursive probably in grade school and stuck with it throughout her life.  My understanding is that they no longer even TEACH cursive in school!  Is this right?

Debbie, this blog is establishing a definite personality for Little Luke.  He's a charmer!  So you are saying that there is nothing to hold up those baggy britches?  If we watch long enough, they'll fall all the way down? Your tune is catchy!!
