I have started and stopped this post, edited and re-edited more times than I care to admit.  A subject near and dear to my heart but uncomfortable talking about at times.  Within my circle of friends, family and colleagues it is not difficult to mention or talk about.  But when it comes to talking to the community it becomes more difficult.

With the market slower, many in our industry are having a difficult time financially and emotionally.  This can reek havoc on many families.  Not only in our industry but throughout the country in many other industries.

The Holidays are a difficult time of year for many.  Those with addictions seem to indulge even more and depression is a major concern for many.  Holiday celebrations often include more drinking and then driving dont drink and drivehome or to the next celebration.

Unfortunately, I have lost friends and family to suicide and alcohol/drug related accidents.

Please reach out to someone if you or someone you know is having a difficult time during the Holiday season.

not everyone diesPlease call a cab, friend or family member to drive you if you have been drinking.  The cost of being caught or worse yet hurting or killing yourself or someone else because you didn't make that phone call is more than the financial implications.

Sometimes its difficult to make that call.  Sometime you don't know who to call.  If you need a ride and are in the Chicagoland area, I am willing to pick you up or get you a ride.

I challenge you to make the commitment to be a source for someone to call if they need a ride or someone to talk to.

This is a timely reminder and important message.  It seems like some of the myths of drinking and driving are

being embraced by younger drivers. Like "it doesn't matter how much I drink, if I eat a lot and

it is over a long time." People at parties can check with everyone who leaves to make sure they

are OK to drive. Portland cab companies have a New Year's Eve service for free rides. Unfortunately that

is only one of the holidays where people drink in excess. Concerned friends can offer to pay for a cab, too, anytime, or give someone a bed for the night.

KIM: It is very very nice that you volunteered to help out in your area!

Kim, thanks for reminding us.  It's so easy to just push away those that really need us the most.

What a great post. This is the time of year we should reach out to help others get through it. No matter how bad things are, there is always someone worse off than ourselves. It is also a good time of year to show our commitment to our communities and I like your idea of being one to call for a ride or to talk to.

Glad to see you posted this.

Mary...  I know the trains offer free rides during the holidays here for those who shouldn't drive.  Its unfortunate that the rides don't come as easy during other times of the year.

Peggy... It is difficult sometimes to understand those depressed or addicted, but it is really when they need us the most!

Cris... There is always someone in a worse situation than our own.

Thank you all for stopping by!

Kimberly... Its unfortunate to lose someone anytime, but the Holidays are even more difficult!  It changes the feel of the Holiday especially if you feel you could have done something to help that person!  Thank you for stopping by!

This is always a must.  It's so easy to think it will happen to someone else or "I can drive" but playing it safe is just the BEST PLAN!

Thank you Kim for stepping up and sending out this reminder for all of us.  :-)  There's no shame in being cautious...

Well done, Kim.

I've always struggled to keep my right mind between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

My wife is really proactive...and I'm grateful.

Good to hear from you.

I am with you Kim.... Never too late to call the cab or someone who can give you the ride. Bowling on friday nights has tapered off the alcohol. We all know what it does to us. See you tomorrw and safe travels my friend!

I have made 'that call' .......   Not often, but when I felt it necessary.

If I feel like having more than a few.... I usually do that at home while smoking some ribs or a brisket.

Otherwise... there is a limit.

Kim, What a kind and thoughtful post. I do know of a person who gets very depressed around the holidays. Thanks for reminding me. Sometimes we get so tangled in the web our own everyday activities that we tend to forget our dear ones.

There should be a local blog or website for sharing a ride during the Holidays.  If everyone had a DD and they offered to take a stranger home on New Years eve..I bet we would have a lot less accidents!  Last year we sponsored a bus for everyone and you would be amazed st the number of people that did NOT wish to use the  bus. :(   It was sad.

We had a benefit 2 weeks ago for a dear friend Nick,  that just came home after 34 days in the hospital and lost half his face because he was hit by a drunk driver that worked at a bar.  He now has 3 plates in his face, a wired jaw, stitch marks everywhere, but by the grace of god and many more months of rehab, they say he will be ok.  Please please please call someone for a ride!  Happy New Year..start it out right by helping someone.
