Motivational Power Quote

What is Defeat?

“What is defeat? Nothing but education,

nothing but the first step to something better.”

Wendell Phillips, 1811 – 1884 Lawyer

As I see it . . . . . . .

What is defeat?

A defeat is in the eye of person who is experiencing the setback and is seen through their attitude.

One thing for sure if you’re out there making an effort to succeed you will run into obstacles have your fair share of challenges and you will experience setbacks.

Some of the things we encounter will be blips on the radar screen while others will test our endurance and our values.

A defeat is acknowledging the fact that we have given our best affords and we were able not produced the desired outcome. We may have ran out of time or resources to continue, but we have made our best affords.

A good example of a defeat is when we look at the Super Bowl one team becomes the Super Bowl Champion and the other team loses the game.

A football team looks at the game through a difference prism. They realize that they have given their best and they ran out of time. The losing team that has the attitude of a winner starts the next season with a mission.

At the start of the new season their mission is to play in the Super Bowl and not to run out of time.

What is defeat? It’s an event that offers a life lesson. The lesson can be used to prevent the situation from occurring again or to change the outcome if you’re put into the same situation in the future.

What is defeat? Above all it’s a temporary condition and a setback how we respond to the condition comes from our attitude. We can approach the condition to find the best way to work through it and to put it behind us and start anew. Or we can let the condition control us.

I love your post.  I just can't get my mind off the Giant's and the Super Bowl.  It means nothing in the real world, but I hope they don't have to learn anything about defeat next Sunday!

You have it right Lou. Transactions that are not successful teach a lesson and if we pay attention we can learn much and be better prepared for the next one. Thank you for that!

I have been watching ice skateers and I am impressed at the come backs of the US skaters.  No defeat here.

Hi Lou--I so agree with you.  Everything in life brings us a lesson and it is our attitude that makes the difference in the learning.

Great post and words of wisdom. Hopefully we learn from all of our mistakes. I so often hear people say that they have made certain mistakes, over and over again. I wonder why?
