ActiveRain. If You Think It's About the Points,
You're Missing the Bigger Picture...

For the better part of the past few years, I've been an active member of this community.
ActiveRain has become part of the daily regimen of things to do on my "List-O-Plenty".
When Jonathan Washburn, the founder of ActiveRain, came up with his sinister plot to fuel our competitive nature by incorporating the point system, I know I wanted to rack up as many as I could.
I wanted to be #1 in my region, the Raleigh/ Cary/ Apex area of North Carolina.
But do I participate here for the points?
NO!
For me, it's not about the points at all.
At its core, ActiveRain is a social media forum, and the only one of its kind where people in Real Estate and its related fields share their knowledge freely amongst one another.
Anyone who is doing this for the points is truly missing out on the social aspects of ActiveRain.
Yes, 34% of my business in 2010, and 14% of it in 2011 can be directly attributed to my involvement here in the Rain.
This year I already have a bunch of incoming and outgoing referrals.
Is it about the business that I participate here?
Well, YES... and NO!
I want and need business. I seek out new opportunities each and every day.
After all, this is how I make my living.
But, at the end of the day, for me at least, it's about the friendships that I've created along the way.
Friendships that have become so solid that even if ActiveRain were to cease tomorrow, we'd still be close.
I won't go into the lengthy list of people I've met, email regularly, or talk to on the phone almost daily for fear that I might leave someone out, but, suffice it to say, that if you're just here for the points, you need to rethink that mind set.
Because you're really not seeing the bigger picture...

Hi Craig--great feature. I often feel like the points are there to encourage us to do what we "should" be doing anyway. I agree wit you that there are so many other benefits to AR that the points are an afterthought these days.
The point summary is addicting but not my purpose for using AR. It's a a good tool to help you stay on top of your blogs. it's easy to come up with excuses why not to blog but the points give me a measurable goal that helps to bring me back and want to blog that much more. That is just my competitive nature i guess.
I love the photo Craig, you are awesome.
I also enjoyed the content, there is so much more going on here then points.
Oh, now I see, it's not about the points, it's about the babes!
Sharon - And meeting people like you too Sharon!
Joni - WHAT?! You're coming to NC?!!! When? I need to know so I can inform my congress people and have them roll out the red carpet for you and your mom and hubby! Kidding aside, hopefully when you do make it this way we can have a meet up and get a bunch of us from NC together.
Praful - Thank oyu for the re-blog Praful. I'm humbled and honored.
Evelyn - I can understand the $$$ factor Evelyn. But I'm pretty certain you're getting your money's worth with all the knowledge you've gained and friendships you've made here in the Rain.
Carie - Just keep participating Carie. The points will add up quicker than you can imagine.
Janet - You completely summed up the whole "point" of my post with your comment Janet! Well done!
Raymond - And that's why the points system is in place. It fuels our competitive nature and gives us the impetus to participate. It's a sinister plot cooked up by the AR Gods!!!
Tom - So much more than the points As far as being "awesome"... Thank you. But these people are truly the "awesome" ones...
The Most Awesome Person of the Week
Gabe - You're a very observant man Gabe. Very observant!
Well now.... I see how you are! Maybe I'll send Rog alone to Raleigh in a couple of weeks, and I can have a quiet weekend all to myself ;0) Nah..... You're stuck with me too!
Points are a great motivator no doubt. A very sly way to get us all started and that's what it did for me. Started me blogging and now I love it, but more on my own blogs now. Still get my daily dose of knowledge and opinions, wouldn't miss that for anything. Points nice, knowledge and friendship better!
Craig, we think the points are fun. 34% of your business is impressive. We do a number of things to attract business... websites, ads, flyers, Facebook, Linkedin, RealBird, newsletters, and on and on. It is hard to figure out exactly what motivated a call when you are putting your name out in so many places.
AR is fun for us, can't say we have had an AR Agent call us with a referral, but our blogs are one way of putting us out there.
Amy - Ha! Ha! Ha! Tell Rog to bring you too. It just wouldn't be the same without you here.
Corrine - It's true. The points are a great motivator. And, yes, I agree that it's a sinister plot perpetrated upon us by the AR Gods to get us to participate. But the benefits are worth it!
So true and well said Craig. Points used to matter, but now I hardly take note. Really what is point? This forum is more than the sum of the parts...or points.
It's not about the points???! Of course I have known that all along.... It's not about Localism either. Although with all the different contests that keep being offered up FOR POINTS I do have days that I wonder about that Craig.
Al & Peggy - I consistently ask people who've not been directly referred to me how they found me. That's how I came up with the 34% number for 2010.
James - Well said my friend. This forum is much more than the sum of its parts.
Gary - Those contests are just to engage the members and to illicit participation. I would much rather see prizes given out than points. Like an all expense trip for two to HERE! But points are probably a lot less expensive!
Well said, Craig, in your inimitable way. Love your photo, too!
Lottie - Thank you Lottie! I've been working on my inimitable this year! How am I doing?!!!
Craig, I'm so glad you brought everything back home. Points are somewhat trivial (but fun) and it's the increased business and deep friendships that are formed here that truly matter.
(And how do I get those legs?! Dang! You really know how to make me look good!)
Kelly - Kelly, at the end of the day, the business, the learning and the friendships created are what truly matters. Anyone who thinks differently is missing the big picture. Don't knock yourself. You're perfect the way you are. But, if you want long legs, this is the only way I know that will help you achieve that goal!!!
Craig ~ I agree with you whole heartedly! The points are great, but the referrals are even better!
Such a wonderful post Craig! <tear>
I am so impressed with all the business you received from your blog, it says so much about the power of ActiveRain and how well you personally market yourself and the wonderful area you live in! Great job.
The points, the friendships, of course, and the information shared here are great reasons to interact here as well.
Thanks for all the great reminders of why we should all take the time to utilize AtctiveRain to the fullest ~ and not just to receive points.
Dawn - The referrals and the friendships can't be beat!
Terrie - Thank you Terrie! Beautifully said. Now here's a tissue. Go dry those eyes of yours....
