Griffin Georgia New Construction Home Owners - Don't call the builder just yet!

Jason and I recently purchased a new construction home in the Greater Griffin Georgia real estate market.  We weren't actually "in the market" for a new construction home in the Griffin Georgia area, but this home was just perfect for us.  The reason why it was just perfect for us was because I actually helped the builder with all the major decisions.  Where the home should be located at.  What floor plan to build.  I picked out the fixtures. The colors that went in each room.  I even picked out which brand of appliances should go in it.

I was completely in love with the home by the time it was finished.

So..........

You guessed it...we bought it!

It was so exciting living in a new construction home!  Everything was so new!  Everything was so clean!  Kind of like when you buy a new car...it just had that certain smell of being new.

Then our first problem happened (and it kept on happening)....

We would wake up every morning and there would be a huge puddle of water and ice on our kitchen floor.  I'm talking... HUGE puddle.  What was even weirder about it all, was that our icemaker would be completely empty!

I called the builder who told me that I needed to contact the refrigerator manufacturer for any issues with the appliances.  So, I called the manufacturer and they more or less told me that I was crazy.  My refrigerator wasn't possessed and wouldn't be spitting ice out in the middle of the night just for the heck of it!

Well, it kept happening and I kept calling.  They finally agreed to send somebody out to look at it.  Of course, the repairman couldn't find the first thing wrong with it!  He more or less told me that I was crazy (very politely...but that is what he called me) and that NOTHING was wrong with my refrigerator or icemaker!

Later that week, I got up around 3:00 AM because I had to leave out early for a continuing education class that was a good 2 hours away.  I stumbled my way into to the kitchen to fix me a glass of water...

Darcy (our Great Dane) was at the fridge pushing his nose into the icemaker! He was making all the ice spill out!  I just sat there and watched!  He didn't stop until all the ice had completely poured out!  He then turned and saw me standing there watching him and took off running (right across the ice)!  He hit it and slid into the keeping room and knocked over the "couch table" and everything came crashing off of it!

Big dumb dog!!!!  I wish I had caught it on video!  It was priceless!

So, make sure you've exhausted all possible causes to any appliance issues before calling your builder or the manufacturer!  However, if you're convinced that your fridge is haunted and want to move...I will be glad to help you with that!

Now THAT is funny, Jessica.  Hmmm...how do you dog proof a fridge?

11/17/2007 11:12 PM by Lisa Heindel, New Orleans West Bank Real Estate (Latter & Blum Inc. Realtors)

That was cute. You didn't know Darcy knew how to do that? lol!

My dog Shadow loves the ice and water from the frig although she's too short to push it herself!

Thanks for the entertaining story....as well as the tip for exhausting all other options for the reasons why an appliance may be malfuntioning :)

Maybe tie a string or tape the lever for the ice in the upright position when you go to bed!

Hilarious story, too bad it is not on video, America's Funniest would pay you!

What did the builder say when you told him what was making the puddle happen?

This was one funny story Jessica!! Here are my ice lovers!! Taco (R) & Bella....(L)

They both love ice, but that is pretty common in Arizona since it can get rather HOT in the desert!!

Funny stuff!

I sooooooooooo wish you had that on video!!   I LOVE Great Danes but have never had a home or a yard large enough to become a Dane mommy.   I can only imagine how hard the builder laughed when you told him what was causing the puddle in the kitchen.

Hi Jessica - what a funny story!!  Good thing you had to be up so early that morning, or you'd still be struggling to figure out what the heck was going on!  And it's too bad you didn't have the video going - what a show that would be and you just might have won some money on America's Funniest Home Videos to boot!

Congrats on your new home - sounds wonderful!!

JESSICA:  It's too bad that you didn't have a video camera recording this.  It would have won you a lot of money on America's Funniest Home Videos.  I love the graphic of the haunted refrigerator.  I'm glad that you can now enjoy your dream home, safe in the knowledge that your appliances aren't out to get you.

I have a three year old that does the same thing sometimes... but he's trainable.  And he doesn't drain it, he just get what he thinks he needs... but the aim isn't so good yet.

Jessica, that is hilarious!!!  I hate when things like that happen but I'm glad you found out what it was.  I bet that was a sight to see!  LOL

You must be a sound sleeper! (I can imagine the ice crashing onto the floor would make a lot of noise). Too funny.

You just tell them, "NO!" and mean it.  That is about it.  Problem solved.

Glad you enjoyed it!  THANK YOU!

11/18/2007 06:38 PM by Jessica Horton (Brio Realty)

Ann:

I had to pinch myself to make sure that I wasn't having a crazy dream.  Like I said above, I don't know if I would have won but I sure would have mailed it off to them.

11/18/2007 06:39 PM by Jessica Horton (Brio Realty)

Charles:

That would have to be Jason sleep walking.  I hit that bed and I'm gone!

11/18/2007 06:54 PM by Jessica Horton (Brio Realty)

Missy:

Thank you!  Watch out...little dogs can get into stuff too!  They often don't realize that they are "little dogs".

I once slept through a tree crashing into our house during a very bad storm!

11/18/2007 07:00 PM by Jessica Horton (Brio Realty)

Ah, I remember the days of being able to sleep through that kind of stuff.  Having a kid will cure that!  Now I wake up if there is the slightest amount of noise...just to make sure our daughter is OK.  Funny story!

Jessica,

That is hilarious.  I thought it might be the kids but the dog!!!!  Thank you for an entertaining story!

D&K:

Sorry guys!  I know that I'm late in replying.  Just been crazy around here.  Hope you wont hold it against me.  I try to take the time to say something more than just "Thanks!".  So, I hope you don't mind if it took awhile to write back.

It's funny that you mention that.  I sleep very sound but if one of my kids stir...I hear it up and I am up.

Glad that you enjoyed the story.  Hope you guys are doing GREAT!

11/20/2007 12:22 AM by Jessica Horton (Brio Realty)

Kim:

Nope it wasn't the kids.  They told me, "See! It wasn't us!!!!"  I had no clue what was going but I knew that I wasn't crazy.  Well....not crazy about that.

Thanks for reading it and glad you got a laugh!

11/20/2007 12:24 AM by Jessica Horton (Brio Realty)

Jason Crouch:

Glad you enjoyed it!  I needed to be able to repay the family fun.  You crack me up with your stories.

11/20/2007 12:25 AM by Jessica Horton (Brio Realty)

My AngelI laughed out loud at your story- what a great post!  If I read it and were in the market for a new home, I would definately buy from you!

Here is a picture of my "longhaired mini doxie" that I paid $200. for. As you can see, she's no more than a raggedy mutt. Still haven't figured out what she is mixed with, but her head is 3 times too big for her body. She is a lovable pooch though, I think I'll keep her! Cheers~!

That's absolutely HILARIOUS!  Sounds like something my mother's dog (appropriately named Houdini) would have done.

11/22/2007 03:04 AM by Ruthmarie Hicks (Keller Williams Realty)

Hilarious, just hilarious!

People say kid's do the darndest things.

SO DO DOGS!

But I love em anyway, kids and dogs alike.

Glad that I could make you laugh.  This is a funny story.  It doesn't matter what type of dog you have as long as it brings joy to your life.

11/24/2007 11:17 AM by Jessica Horton (Brio Realty)

Ruthmarie:

Thank you! I'm glad you thought it was funny...because it was to me too!

I love that name for a dog!  It's great!

11/24/2007 11:19 AM by Jessica Horton (Brio Realty)

Erby:

You are so right...dogs do the darnest things.  However, my kids say the darnest things!  So do Jason Crouch's kids...if you haven't read his posts...you need to!

11/24/2007 11:20 AM by Jessica Horton (Brio Realty)
