McHenry County College could start an Associate Degree in Nursing program by the fall of 2008. The Illinois Community College Board unanimously approved the program. The Illinois Board of Higher Education and state nursing board also gave the program and curriculum their blessing. This program helps fill the nursing shortage, provides a career ladder for students, and supports the health care needs in rapidly expanding McHenry County.

The McHenry County Economic Development Corporation (MCEDC) is taking some important steps for area businesses:
County Careers - high school students got the chance to talk to 36 McHenry County companies and learn what careers are available and where the critical shortages are.
Vocational Workshops - Seven workshops for high school teachers and counselors were held to find out what skills companies are looking for and what local jobs are available for their students.
The Business Accelerator for Innovation & Collaboration - a federal grant helped to target McHenry County's more than 600 manufacturers and their nearly 20,000 employees in an effort to create jobs and new business in McHenry County.

Downtown Crystal Lake, the city's Illinois Main Street Organization, won the state's Creative Fundraising Campaign award at the 14th annual Illinois Main Street conference. The Illinois Main Street Program is known for promoting economic development and renewing state's historic downtown areas.
