Transitional Homes

Hi Mimi.  Some years ago I would of said no way!  Now that kind of looks good to me:)  Just peace and quiet with all the conviences.

A personal sanctuary for whatever reason is something that we all need from time time.  These transitional homes look like they provide a lot of utility. 

I like the idea of these transitional homes.  Perhaps we'll see more and more of these as boomers continue to age.  Thanks for sharing this!

Mimi, we are seeing them increasingly in Texas; we call them Casitas (spanish for small house). It's not uncommon to see listings with "Quarters" which are frequently small apts. built over the garage. Increasingly the Casita is becoming more popular as it is generally understood to be a ground-level separate and independent little house. Why are they popular?  For all the reasons you said.. and also for an international city like Houston.. many cultures favor properties with living space for extended families often spanning many generations. And .... many home owners families are from other countries and the expense for them to come visit is often justified by the intention to visit for LONG periods of time -- 3-4 months at a time --- so the Casita is quite nice for extended "visiting" space, as well as the afore mentioned living space. 

Mimi, there was a company here just 2 weeks ago demo-ing these small homes. Some still had wheels so you could travel with it. They were not handicap accessible though. Love it!

When I first saw your blog title I was thinking, "Oh, transitional" (the cross between traditional and contemporary styles in design). It is how in our world of staging design, takes the baby boomers interiors (mainly traditional) and incorporates contemporary style to reach the younger demographic of buyers.  

Example: like this one from Candice Olsen (Designer and a master of transitional styles).

 

Now, that you have brought into the light "Transitional Homes", I'll have to be careful on how I explain this to my clients.

Mimi, Seems as though there would be many uses for a traditional home.  I like the idea of a writer’s cottage or a private gym.

I love this idea and just found my dream home in Bend Oregon last weekend. It's a lovely European inspired craftsman, cobblestone courtyard with fireplace and a covered walkway to a guest hut - for writing? guests? office?

Mimi-Many of my friend's husbands have their "I love me" rooms, so why couldn't we have an "I love me" house.  You could call it the Foster Compound!  I love this and it makes an awful lot of sense!  I want you to have one so you will have a place to write!!

Having a transistional home on the property, as you say if zoning allows, makes a lot of sense to keeping an aging parent close, but allows them independence.  I can see a lot of value from these.

That's it! Sign me up, I am ready for my own transitional house.

What a neat idea. I would love to have a separate  house to work in and get my work done quietly with the dogs barking at the FedEX truck, the phone ringing constantly and just other distractions. Did you get one? I know if my mother was still alive, she would be mad and say I was ignoring her! But it is a great idea and looks like an enchanted cottage.

Like Debb mentioned, that's what your term, menstrual hut, brought to mind - The Red Tent. Seriously, I've never heard of this. This is amazing. I could see it being just perfect for lots of folks.

Hi Mimi, This is such a smart solution to a longer range problem for many.  Sadly in much of CA, the communities have way too strict zoning laws. The $75K would easily turn into $150,000 if they would even allow it. The building fees are travesty here.

Hi Mimi-call it what you may but I love it! I have a large bohemian painting studio out behind my home nestled in the tropical foilage with a stereo and a half bath and that is my favorite place in the world! The dogs don't even bother me out there except when they come call me for dinner:)
