Secrets of the Crystal Coast!

I absolutely love living, working & playing on the Crystal Coast of North Carolina!  I hope it's obvious and I hope other folks living here agree with me.  I often share my favorite spots, my favorite "secret" hiking trails, some of the best views (unknown to most), and I feel great about sharing those things.

There is actually a place that we locals call "Sand Dollar Island".  Every time I have had the pleasure of visiting Sand Dollar Island, I have been greeted by thousands & thousands of Sand dollars and other wonderful treasures from the sea! The island only appears at lowest of tides and always remains slightly underwater.  I was thrilled that My brother-in-law trusted me Sand Dollar Island, Crystal Coast NC!enough to share it with me and my family.  I wish I could share it with you, but he has told me in no uncertain terms, that if I tell anyone where it is, He will have to kill me (and I think he was serious)!  But... if you move to the Crystal Coast of North Carolina, or maybe you just visit often, ask around..... Maybe you will catch a local in a weak moment, and they will spill the beans!  If not, I highly recommend exploring the Crystal Coast to discover your own secrets!

Amy, Some things you just have to live there to know!  I know I have not encountered too many of those sand dollars on the beach by the place my in-laws rent....but there's a lot of beachcombing going on during the summer months they visit.  Bill

Amy. This looks like a great place to live and work. Going to work must be hard with the ocean right out your door so to speak.   Good Luck in 2012.   E

Bill - It is rare to find a Sand Dollar on the Beach, but on this island..... There are almost Too Many... heaven!  Maybe we can go for a little boat ride when you get down here again :0)

Ed - It is hard to go to work some days.  I often stop off and enjoy the view for a while before hitting the office ;0)  Have a fabulous day!

Wayne & Jean Marie - You are welcome!  I wish I had more "free" time to enjoy our area, but I definitely feel blessed to live in paradise!  Life is Good!

Good morning, Amy. I remember picking up sand dollars when I was a kid. They are a very unique sea creature...

Scott - I do love living here, and we have lots of fun.  Unfortunately, we still have to work, go to school, and blah, blah, blah....  But we save a fortune in vacations ;0)

Dorie - Thank You!  I do feel very blessed to live in such a beautiful & wonderful area....

Michael - The are unique creatures.... The important thing to remember at Sand Dollar Island, is that you must only keep the dead sand dollars.  It is illegal to keep a live one, but fun to hold them and feel the tickle of their tiny little legs (if that's what you call them).

Hi Amy,

I love being by the water. No matter if it's a lake, stream or a ocean.

I just love being around water. This is why I'm going to be making a trip later this year to visit.

Have a great day in North Carolina.

Best, Clint McKie

Clint - I agree 100%... I'm happy being near water!  And definitely, we'll have some fun in the water when you visit..... even catching crabs together!  Wishing you a fabulous day too!

How cool is that? So many people only see sand dollars in gift shops at beach resorts. You get to see them every day if you want to!

Shar - I suppose It wouldn't be my fault if you "followed" me!  My brother-in-law would understand..... right?

Nevin - Tan Man is my little water baby!  That kid loves the ocean and everything that goes with it!  Maybe next time you visit, we can head to the island (blindfolded, of course).

Amy,  In 1995 Ted and I rented a cottage on the beach in Emerald Isle (for any readers from "off" that's the western end of our island.) for three months in the middle of winter, while our condo was being remodeled.  (That's a blog idea!)  In any case I walked that part of the beach every morning.  There was usually no-one out there but me and during that three months I found a total of 21 intact sand dollars.  I still have them and I still cherish them.  I have not been to the "secret" island and so far you and your nasty old brother in law have refused to tell.  But I'm watching you.  This may be the year.

Amy, "Sand Dollar Island" sounds just like the kind of place you would definitely want to keep secret.  It reminds me a little of the south east end of Aruba where you could wade out into the water and find all sorts of cool things.
