11 Comments on Paul Bunyan Statue, answer to Where is it Wednesday...somewhere in Portland, OR 2/1/12
How fun! I love this idea! What a creative way to engage your local market!
Hi Cindy,
This "Paul" has a rich history and has made the National Register of Historic Places.
Pick me, pick me. There was one back in my drinking days outside a bar in N Portland. I'm thinking near denver and ? I beleive there also was one on the highway to seaside from portland. (HWY 26)
Hi Cindy,
Rob is right with North Denver Avenue. Actually, I found some discrepancies in the addresses. The first I found was at the intersection of North Interstate Avenue and Willis Boulevard, but another photo clearly showed North Denver. This "Paul Bunyan" is located in Kenton and was orginally built in 1959. He is, by one account, 37' tall and weighs 6 tons. He was somewhat recently relocated a distance of about 50' by Tri-Met to make room for a new section of light rail and sequoia trees planted behind him.
Hi Cindy,
we have seen a few of these "Paul" guys in various places in Oregon, I recall visiting a museum / park and restaurant with Bunyan Burgers....
Hi Rebecca, I love to do them and actually learn quite a bit about Portland as well!
Hi John, you bet he did! You are correct! This Paul Bunyan made the historic register in 2009. Congrats! He does sit right at the "V" where those two Avenues (N. Denver & N. Interstate)meet. I do see the same about him being moved, so included that link from the Portland Tribune. Kenton is one of those cool towns with that wonderful small town feel. It was pretty cool seeing him when it was so unexpected. I learn something new everyday!
Hi Rob, Oh you are right there for sure in N. Denver. so I'll call it a tie between you and John since you both did good! I'm not sure about the one on 26 heading to the beach..but will google it and see! You're memory is not too bad for someone thats been out of Portland for a bit.
Hi Peter and Linda, Oh, now I can SO go for a nice burger! Here's the recipe from a Taste of Home
Honest to goodness, If I ever make your way, I'm going to find you and pay you to be my tour guide.
Knash
Hey Kevin, you're on! although there would be no way you'd be paying me!
