Fall is the time of year you need to plant your garlic. Never grown garlic before? It's easy... purchase some garlic at your local grocery tile up an area in your garden, don't have a garden just work up the soil some place in your yard, around your home, garage or shed, your can even plant them in large containers and leave them out all winter. Garlic grows best during the winter season. After you have worked up the soil separate your garlic into cloves and place them about 3 inches below the soil and about 3 inches apart, cover and pat down firmly. By spring you will see the sprouts. It takes a good two to three years to reach large bulbs so leave them in the ground to grow, test them if you like and check their progress. I spent an hour today planting some that my father sent me that he has been growing for over 20 years. It's easy and fun and who doesn't like garlic in almost everything. Plant your tulip and other flowering bulbs this same way.
Easy Recipe:
Take whole garlic bulb and cut in half length wise. With cut garlic facing up place on large piece of tin foil, drizzle with olive oil and salt and pepper. Fold foil on top and edges, making a small bowl out of the foil. Bake in oven 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Garlic will come out soft as butter, spoon out individual cloves and spread on toast or crusty bread, add butter and a little salt... "optional" = sprinkle with fresh chopped basil. Mmmm Good.
Hi - I'm an avid gardener in Nashville myself. Thanks for the tips!
