CASH MOBS - HAVE YOU HEARD OF THEM?

You've heard of flash mobs? Now there's even a T.V. show on Wednesday evenings dedicated to harnessing the power of a mob to do good and make changes in this world for the better.

Along these same lines, enter cash mobs, a concept which debuted around the fall of 2011. The article linked below reports that The Wall St. Journal credits a 37 year old engineer from Buffalo, NY for the original idea. The premise involves using Social Media to get the word out that customers are needed to help out a local business that is suffering. Facebook and Twitter advertise a predetermined meet-up location and a certain day and time.

There are a few rules to know but nothing overly difficult to abide by and unique situations can be individually tailored. The event has to be announced at least 1 week in advance. You must come prepared to spend at least 20.00 in cash although you can spend as much as you like and you should be willing to meet up after the night is over at a local watering hole to celebrate a successful shopping venture. The chosen recipient of this goodwill must be involved in giving back to the community.

So far, there are 20 cities who have participated from California to Michigan. The latest one, was right here in Bellport, NY, where, reportedly, $2,800 was spent in one store in just a few hours; that is a dollar amount that is many times over what might normally have been earned in one day.

"Inside Edition" heard about the event and sent a crew over to tape it. An air date has not yet been determined. The idea was so successful that Riverhead, another Suffolk County community, which has also suffered in this economy, heard about Bellport's success and is rallying to have one of their own in February.

Boy. I wish that idea had been around when I had a shop.  If we would all just do a daily mini-flash mob by avoiding the big box stores which get most of their stuff from China and shop with local businesses that carry American made, our economy would improve right away.

Hi Jill,

Maybe we can do that with our listings...create a flash mob bidding war? Just kidding - it's actually quite an interesting idea. I have made a point of shopping little boutique shops in my area...I love them and would hate to lose them because of a lack of business.

That would be terrific for our antique mall.  I will definitely see if Albertville, Minnesota can be in the running.  What a great post.

Oh, boy, Debb - I am so buying into that idea.

Ron - I'm sure there are places all over our nation that would greatly benefit from this concept.

Hi Jill: This is reminiscent of the movie Pay Forward. Nothing is impossible if people can unite to a common cause. Thanks for sharing.

Dear Jill - I didn't realize this was called this...I did blog about the power of Twitter, where a son of a business owner needed to help his Mom & her book store & he tweeted that he would give a hot dog to all that purchased over a certain amount & he was will to do it for 1,000 customers which cost him about $1000 (I believe I remembered...will have to go back for the exact amounts)..basically $1 hot dog for every $20 at his Mom's store.

....but the same or similar concept!  It was to save a small local business that his Mom had....there was another case of a restaurant owner that had been opened for years & fell on hard times & then everyone rallied on Mother's Day (as a lot take Moms out, etc.)  I think this is a fantastic concept, where we can pay it forward & rally for to save our "local" businesses that are sooooo important!!  Excellent blog.  I "suggest" & am re-blogging!

I love this idea and the success story associated with it.  We need more support for local businesses and this is a great way to save a small business.  Suggested!

Belinda - It sounds like something that's bound to catch on.

Maria - I don't know the movie but you're right - unite for a common cause!

Pam - Thanks so much for the reblog and suggest. That's a real nice son watching out for his mom like that. The concept is very similar and I hope he was successful. Social media is being used in ways nobody imagined way back when.

Kathy - Thanks also for the suggest. Support your local business is popular again and just in the nick of time before small mom and pops disappear from our landscape.

Jill - I did not know about it. I think there is an added element to the event, and it is keener understanding that we are the support for our local businesses.
