Do Looks Really MatterI just realized something about myself...I give people less than 30 seconds before I decide if I like them or not.  Is it right?  No.  Is it fair? No.  But is it true?  Yes!

The Interviews

I had this epiphany just the other day while I was on an interviewing panel.  Let me tell you a little about the three gentlemen that we interviewed.

Your Clothes Are Too Big

For starters, the first candidate had on a suit that was too big and a shirt that was obviously the wrong neck size. So the tie made the collar look bunched. He looked very uncomfortable answering our questions and didn't have very good eye contact. While he had some of the qualifications we were looking for, he just did not have an engaging style.

The second candidate  was dressed even worse. His suit looked like it was about two sizes too big!  His handshake was limp and sweaty...totally disgusting.  I really wanted to excuse myself to wash my hands.  As we went through the interview sweat was dripping down his head and he would periodically wipe it away with his index finger.  Yuck!  Although he didn't make a very good impression, in the end he had some good ideas.  But I wouldn't hire him.

Someone Different

The last candidate sold me with his handshake. Firm and he had good eye contact.  He wore a well-fitted navy blue blazer, khaki colored slacks, light blue shirt and paisley print tie.  He spoke with passion and was confident without even a hint of arrogance.  He looked professional and handled the interview quite well.  I would hire him in a second.

The Bottom Line For Realtors

Bottom line...your appearance matters and real estate agents, that includes you!  We are constantly meeting with people.  We need to understand that first impressions mean a lot.  Our appearance could mean the difference between getting the client or not.  For better or worse, most people do form an opinion of us within the first few seconds of meeting.  So we need to make those seconds count.

Real Estate Agents, Be Professional

Although real estate agents don't have to wear a suit and tie, you do need to have a professional appearance.  At your first meeting with a client make sure you are wearing clean, well-fitting clothes that are appropriate for your marketplace.  Even if you are used to wearing shorts and a polo shirt, it can't hurt you to wear slacks and a shirt at that first meeting.  Ladies, I know we all have our personal style, but make sure you don't go overboard with the hair, makeup and perfume.  Nothing cut too low, too high, too short or too tight.  Give a firm handshake and look people in the eye.

Can I Trust You With My Purchase?

This is the beginning of a professional relationship that you want to last for years and years so you want to get it started on the right foot.  Buyers and sellers are looking for someone they can trust.  This is possibly the largest transaction they have ever made.  How you look at that first meeting is part of building that trust.  So if necessary, step out of your comfort zone and pay attention to how you are dressed.  How your appearance  really does make a difference...whether you like it or not.

Unfortunately what you say is true, although I wish the other two can catch a break somewhere. Or that someone tells them how to dress. Look at how Zuckerberg dresses!

Candy, we all make decisions or in the least are influenced by first impressions.  Yes, one should be careful about their dress and appearance at business functions.  And, I need to not make rapid decisions about people, based on physical characteristics that people can't control.

Hi Candy,

Love it!

We live in Microsoft country, and they have forever redifined the idea of dress in our area.

But as agents, we deal with all kinds of people, and first impressions are still important.

I guess men still have it easier than women. Your quick rules for women have a lot of restrictions: "Nothing cut too low, too high, too short or too tight."

Thanks for the post

Phil

Appearance DOES matter. But luckily for me most of my buisness is handled online. I rarely meet folks and when I do they are usually already working with me. So when I show up looking like a bum it doesn't matter :)

Hey I'm old!! And I work from home. My wife bought me shorts in several different colors so if she sees me in red for several days in a row she reminds me to take a shower and change my clothes :)

In fact I just remebered I need to go shave.

Your post also remends me of the big REO broker in our area. In fact I believe he is one of the biggest if not the biggest in the country. Closes over 2,000 deals a year. I've known him for years and sometimes I'll see him standing downtown having a smoke outside his office and I swear he looks like a homeless guy. Long unruly hair. Hasn't slept in days. Just standing there puffin' away. Makes well over a $1,000,000 a year!!!

Judging folks by their appearances is shallow. But we all do it.

Love your post. . and I guess some Realtors DO need a staging job on themselves

You've reminded me playing racquetball with a guy and he was sweating more than normal . .it was my serve and the ball was wet with his sweat. .I wanted to stop the game and go wash my hands in the middle of the serve . . I decided to continue in order to keep the competitive spirit.. I beat the crap out of him and I hit the shower soon after. ..ahhhh... the agony of winning!

Next time you use a picture of me I would appreciate you letting me know first.  :)  Just kidding.  I think appearance is very important, but you won't ever see me in a suit and tie.  Not my style.

I find I walk a fine line here in Florida.

My natural instinct is to dress slightly more formal ( something to do with my background years ago in the finance industry).  And yes, well fitting clothes, NEATLY PRESSED really do make a difference to how customers perceive you.  For listing appointments, I wear nothing else.

However, getting in and out of a car in the heat of a Florida summer, while wearing long pants and tailored shirts, can cause quite a bit of perspiration which is clearly very unattractive. Therefore, I'm drawn more and more to wearing shorts and pattern shirts. Casual but not too casual. Hmmm, I'm not so good at that LOL.

I guess the key is to dress appropriate to the situation.

Candy, I have to agree with you. A sloppy appearance often translates to sloppy work in our minds. The good first impression can mean getting the listing.

Candy, Great Post. I think this type of judging behavior is hard-wired into the human psyche. We do it all the time, and often without conciously thinking it through.

all valued points, I wear a tie every day, even on Friday and if I have an appointment on the weekend also, have to get past that first impression and what ever I can do for them to buy from me is what I need to do

I heard on the news a few weeks ago that real estate agents are the best dressers of any other profession.

Candy - NICE one...

My wife is always on me about making sure that I look nice. She went so far as to make up a set dress code for me: Nice dress shirt, striped, but not too much, not over the top and not too white collar, it goes with nice high end jeans (I really don't care for suits), and I wear wingtips almost daily.

I don't have an issue with meeting people, and I was TAUGHT how to shake hands long ago - definitely a class a few people could use. Then again, I was raised in Europe and eat with a fork AND a knife, I know, SO full of myself eh?!

What happened to manners? I won't call clients back if I don't mesh with them, and if I don't feel good near them - it goes both ways.

Candy, I learned long ago, that your next client could be standing in line behind you in the grocery store.  So no more shopping in sweats for me.

You're right.  Good article.  Here in Hawaii, if you wear a suit as a Realtor, it would not go over.  I have gotten so slack that most times, I go to meet a client in shorts and golf shirt.  If it's a dressup then long pants and aloha shirt.  If it's a 'high classed' meeting then 'dress shirt and dress pants, no tie.'

All of these are good points, and one that is IGNORED by some is the PERFUME AND THE COLOGNE!  I went to an event recently where I got up and moved THREE times because someone came and sat near me that had bathed themselves in perfume.  I have sensitivities to perfumes and colognes, and I'm not alone.  Many people have low tolerance and even allergies to fragrances.

It's like a chain reaction. When we initally don't like or do like someone, I dictates how we react to certain aspect of the initial meeting.

Candy, this is a very true. I have had a client say they picked me to be their agent because I "cleaned up nice." That statement is a little before my time but I eventually caught on to what she was saying.
