reading

If you are a home inspector around Reading, PA, you are welcomed to join our next Keystone ASHI meeting.

Our next meeting will be held on Monday, February 6th, 2012 at The Inn at Reading.

This is for ASHI members.  Non-ASHI members are welcomed to attend as guests.

The speaker for this month will be Steve Seifert of All Slate Roofing and he will be presenting on slate roofing.

Reading, PA and surrounding still has a number of homes with slate roofing.  As a matter of fact, the most recent rental property I purchased with my wife has a slate roof.  They are quite common around here.slate roof

Roofing shingle made of slate is great for a number of reasons.  When installed properly, they have a typical lifespan of 80 to 100 years!  Slate has an extremely low water absorption index (less than 0.4%) and its low tendency to absorb water also makes it very resistant to frost damage and breakage due to freezing.

Slate roof tiles are usually fixed using either nail fixing, or the hook fixing method as is common with Spanish slate.  Nails will traditionally be copper, although modern alloy and stainless steel alternatives are used as well. When either of these methods is used properly, you'll have a long-lasting weathertight roof

Steve will be discussing all of this and more during his presentation.

The meeting will be held at the Inn of Reading at 1040 Park Rd in Reading.

David, this would be an interesting event to attend.     We must not have this type of roofing in our area, I have never heard of it before!

Hi David. My house is in the southern end of Lancaster County. Not all that far from you. We too have a lot of slate roofs in this area. Mine is one of them. The house was built in 1890 and still has the original roof. I'm relieved to see that mine looks to be in far better shape than the picture you have. I know I'm pushing the life span, but so far only minor repairs have been necessary. Crossing my fingers.

Joan- Reading, PA and, actually, a lot of PA has older homes and that's where you find a lot of the slate roofing.  It is a very nice looking roof!  It would be very expensive to get a new one, of course.

Don- wow, that's great!  An original roof from 1890 (that's still functional) is something to brag about!

Nice to meet you David. Thanks for stopping by my blog. Be sure to join YouTube Thursdays too - we help promote one another's video efforts. Inspection companies can produce some great videos for consumers.

Slate roofs sound pretty good - 80 to 100 years! Not bad of a lifespan.

Bill- I maintain the slate roofs I have, but wouldn't consider replacing them.. you would get negative return on investment.

Hi David, Slate roofs are very common in our area and I really enjoy seeing them.  They seem to last forever, yet it is sad to see houses where the slate is damaged for it is costly to repair or replace.

Your group really has some interesting speakers.

Gloria,

I agree with you.  Slate roofs are great and it's a shame when those roofs go bad.  We had a rental we had purchased several years ago with a slate roof that was beyond repair.  We put an asphalt shingle roof down in place, and the good news is the roofer was able to keep a good portion of the slate tiles for future work and gave us a good discount for it.
