I've noticed that again the number of Featured Posts appears to be dwindling - even as the membership on Active Rain is growing.  Is this due to posts being made within groups but not the community in general - or is it due to a real drop in posting activity/

I like to read the featured posts since someone (Matt!) has already reviewed and highlighted them as being of interest.

Any pearls of wisdom?

And...I haven't forgotten my meme - look for it tomorrow!

I'm actually a little bit glad when the number of featured posts drops.  That means that more people are likely to read posts by people they wouldn't even have noticed before because they mostly only read the featured, pre-screened ones.  And reading more posts by people they wouldn't even have noticed before means they meet more people.

I think it's somewhat akin to the blog The Harper Team had on Exploring the Obvious - Welcome the New Guy! in which people attending a networking event only talked to people they already knew.  If you just go to the listing of posts and read through them, scanning as necessary, you find the most interesting gems that didn't strike the "screener's" attention or catch their interest.

However, to answer your question about a dwindling number of posts, between Christmas and the Great Seattle Blackout of 2006, I think Matt and crew have had way too much on their plates to be reviewing a lot of posts! ;-)
