The holidays are upon us, with Thanksgiving just 4 days away. And so begins a series of holiday events in many of our coastal towns. Lots of trees are already up and decorated, residents are installing lights, and the holiday retail season is in full swing...like it or not.
The Encinitas Holiday/Christmas parade will be held this year on Saturday December 1, beginning with a tree lighting at the Lumberyard Courtyard, a retail shopping center (on the coast highway, Route 101, at the south end of the downtown area) at 5:00 PM. This is the largest community event in Encinitas.
This event has not been without controversy. In 2005 the name was changed by the Mayor from Holiday Parade to Christmas Parade, setting off a series of boycotts from past participants, calls and emails from both critic and supporters, and plenty of media coverage. Obviously not everyone celebrates Christmas and the issues have swirled around this very matter...lots of communities have, over the years, changed the names of their celebrations.
The highlight of the evening is, of course, the parade, with about 3200 children participating, along with floats, marching bands, specialty cars and a variety of sponsoring organizations; the parade begins at 5:30 PM. This is not the 50th year of the event since it was halted for a period of time, but it IS a celebration of the first one 50 years ago.
Don't miss this great community event and get into the holiday spirit!
