After the decision was made to move the Prince William County seat of government to Manassas the fifth Prince William courthouse was built in 1893 to replace the old Brentsville Courthouse and served until 1984 when the current courthouse was built two blocks away
Recently, the old courthouse went through a major renovation and can now be rented for meetings and receptions.
In 1911 the courthouse was the site of a jubilee marking the 50th anniversary of the First Battle of Manassas
. The commemorative plaque and cannons are in plain view at the corner of Grant and Lee.

Karen, what a great history lesson...the cannon's, courthouse and that bottom photo kind of puts some of what we read in the history books into perspective...oh yes, and even the names of the streets; Grant & Lee.
Nick Of course, the first major battle of the Civil War was in Manassas
Karen, you are the expert when it comes to blogging about local historical sites! That's wonderful that this courthouse can be rented for meetings and receptions, so that residents and guests can enjoy it. :)

Karen, nice to see they restored this beautiful building instead of tearing it down and replacing it with a new one. You can't replace history.
Karen, I love it when they find a way to keep historic buildings useful and open to the public. Sorry, I've been away from AR, I hope the New Year has been treating you well. Looks like you've been keeping busy.
Leilani It is quite simple since there is co much of it in Prince William County
Kay Since development of Prince William County lagged behind counties to the north, we had an opportunity to avoid their mistakes
Larry Glad to see you back - we are optimistic about 2012
