The annual official monument Lighting Ceremony will be on November 21 from 5 to 7 p.m.  From my Century 21 Shoreland office, I have a perfect view of the monument and it is beautiful at night while it is lit up!  It puts everybody in the holiday mood!

Each year the monument is set alight to celebrate the Mayflower Pilgrims' landing in Provincetown on November 21 of 1620. It remains lit up through New Year's Day.

The monument, is a 252-foot granite tower, was built at the turn of the century to commemorate the landing. Before the Pilgrims disembarked from their ships to explore the Outer Cape land that fell first in their sights, they wrote the now-famous Mayflower Compact, a document that set down a new rule of law for a "new land." Although they eventually moved on to Plymouth, the Pilgrims spent five weeks exploring the Cape region before they decided the terrain was too rough for settlement.

The lighting of the Pilgrim Monument is a tradition on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, and a verysocial occasion, with many people from Provincetown and the surrounding area gathering to enjoy the lighting.  It is best viewed from the grounds of the Pilgrim Monument.  But, it can be seen from a number of other areasin Provincetown!

The Provincetown Museum will be open for free admission between 5 and 7 p.m. on November 21. The illumination will occur at 6:00p.m. The Provincetown Museum and Pilgrim Monument are located on High Pole Hill Road off of Bradford Street. Rick,

I don't think many people realize the rich history of P-town, thanks for the lesson.  When ever I pass by a home with the boat plaque on it, it is a constant reminder of the past.  Keep writing.
