What you don't know about Faceboook Groups can hurt you!

We love Facebook and we really love the open dialogue that happens on our Profile, our Pages, and the Groups we partake in.  The problem is that you really only have control over 2 of the 3.  Huh?

friend button  like button1   group button

Groups are not yours.

Technically speaking, a group belongs to Facebook.  Duh!  Technically, everything in Facebook belongs to Facebook.  But beyond that, you might think a Group belongs to the People.

Power to the People! – right?

WRONG!  The sad truth is that the Group doesn’t belong to the People.  It doesn’t belong to the members.  The control of the Group is actually with the people or person who is an admin of the Group.

Why is that bad?

When you friend someone, you generally know who they are. Chances are that’s why you “friended” them in the first place.  When you LIKE a Page you generally know what you are LIKING.  If I like the Page of ABC Widgets I know it’s ABC Widgets that I’m liking.  That makes sense.

But what if the page for ABC Widgets isn’t actually for them and in reality a page for touting the benefits of XYZ Widgets in disguise?

“Mike, that’s silly!  Besides that Facebook wouldn’t let them do that.  Heck, even I know you can’t change the title of your page after 100 likes.”

Very True.  And very true that there are measures in place to stop vendors from doing just that with a Page.  Pages are Safe.  Trust in the Pages you’ve liked.

community standards

However, there’s NOTHING in place to stop that happening with a Group.  A Group can change direction at a moments notice.  A Group can be a thinly disguise veil for a Vendor or group of Vendors.  That free advice you got from the Group isn’t free, it may just be a paid commercial endorsement.

Groups are the “Wild West of Facebook” and yet few people have realized it.  Unfortunately, there are some who have and they are poised to take full advantage of the situation!

Can you do anything about it?  Unless they are breaking the Community Standards (bullying, hate speech, harassment, threats, etc) – nope.  The only remedy you have is to leave the group.

You've been Chuck Testa'dWant to know who is behind a Group?  Click the see all members and then sort by Admins.  That will show you who Admins the group, who can add members and delete posts.  It won’t show you the politics going on behind the scenes, that’s up to you to figure out.

For what it’s worth I admin a few Groups, actively engage in a few, and absolutely refuse to partake in a few others.

Hey Mike,

I'm not a part of a Facebook Group, and not exactly sure of the ramifications of being part of a group except general deception.

Best of success to you this year!

Yes, this post might come off as scary but at the same time there are groups out there that provide real value.

Recently there was an uproar over a popular couple of groups who's focus was more of a 'community of help' that changed to more of a 'commercial venture'.  You can yell and scream all you like, (and for what it's worth I thought that fundamentally it was wrong), but the group belongs to the owners.

Mike,

I'm fine with the groups I join. The ones that tick me off, are the ones that add me automatically.

Mike- I attended a tech class put on by my local Board of Realtors on Facebook and some of the other social media.  The presenter had to change her info for us at the last minute because Facebook came up with something new.. again!  I can't keep up!

I rerouted from Kathy's post, too. Great explanation on FB Groups. If you were doing a 365 things to do in an area,  do you think Groups or a Page is preferable?

Mike,

Thanks for the great info.  I'm going to take another look at every group I have joined and have considered creating a few "communities groups" but may have to reconsider based on the worry of commercialization.

Mike, I believe I watched a group "change course" recently, just like you described. Seems that once there were a LOT of people in it, they rolled out a way to attempt to charge people for the same things that they'd been giving away free.

Eric - That was the group I was referring to.  That said, I believe in their right to make $ anyway they want.  Free enterprise and all, but I also would like to believe in what groups should mean to people and not what you might be allowed to do just because there's no rule stating you can't.

The right way would be to create a Page, not a group.

Cheryl - Your 356 things should be a Page, simple as that.

Kathy - thanks for the mention!  Honored!  :)

I've also read that many old groups will be archieved and will be replaced with the 'new group' format.  I'm not sure what all the details are behind this, but it seems things will be changing in the world of FaceBook groups soon enough!!
