Who woulda thunk it?

A hollow-core door is transformed into an architectural back drop for photographic art. This is a project we did for our last listing. It was a large contemporary home in Redmond with very little detail. We knew artwork was going to be important and the problem was we didn't have enough big artwork for the space. So we took two hollow-core doors, painted them the same color as the kitchen. That helped to warm up the living and dining rooms and unified the entire space. We hung the doors on the wall, and hung our artwork on the doors. The effect was dazzling to say the least! The beauty of this idea: it's inexpensive, you can change the look simply by changing the color on the door, and you can also change out your artwork and it cost almost nothing. This is a perfect fix for those big, cold, contemporary houses, short of investing in very expensive, contemporary art.

Susan,

I  love this idea!  It's a great alternative, as you said, to buying big art for a contemporary home.  Could you please share with us, how did you attach the art to the door -- can it be removed later?  Just wondering.

Susan - Fabulous idea. Easy, affordable and it works! Love it. I also would like to know how you hung it up. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Maureen: There's 2 different ways to do it so I'll post a detailed explanation a little later this evening. Thanks.

Susan - alright, I have an out and out confession to make - are you listening?  I will never be able to keep up with your creativity as it pertains to out of the box home staging and design idea's.  Thank you so very much for being generous with your idea's and cost saving suggestions.  You are brilliant.

Maureen, Rhonda and Kathy: With this project we were in a hurry so Tim just used long screws to put the door on the wall and then put 2 smaller screws in the door to hang the pictures.   The best way to do it is  to mount a heavy duty hanger on the back of the door just like you would to hang a picture and then use 2- 50 lb. or 1- 1oo lb. hook on the wall. Screws still work the best to hand the artwork to the door because the wood on the door is relatively thin. Hopes that helps. When we de-stage I'll probably take some close up pictures to add to the blog. Thanks...

Susan - Great idea, beautifully staged, great property and oh yeah - awesome photos!  Your home seller is fortunate to have such a talented professional representing them! Thank you for sharing this idea.  I think we're all going to end up trying it.  - Calie

Susan, Calie (above) sent me a note telling me to check out your post. I'm sure glad she did. This is absolutely brilliant. Did you have trouble finding the doors without the holes cut in them for the knobs? You deserve the raffia award which Jackson bestows. Great Work!

Really great idea Susan!! CLEVER! Remember this everyone----It is important to purchase a hollow core door slab WITHOUT the door-knob cutout!!  : )  I was happy to see the sofa pulled 'away' from the wall-good eye!!  Regards-Kathleen G

Susan, brilliant as my new English client would say.  Not many lofty rooms in my area, but some high ceilings in the A-frame homes.

Now the challenge.  I have 5? (maybe more) hollow core, mahogany doors, with the knobs holes, in my barn awaiting a project.  I know they can be a desk, a shelf etc., but I wanna use Susans brilliant idea with these doors.  You creative types can figure it out, right.

Thanks Susan, bookmarking this one!

Wendy Casey - Vancouver, BC

11/27/2007 04:21 PM by Wendy Casey (A-List Home Staging & Decor)

Susan, what do you think of covering the "holed" versions with canvas (or a painter's drop cloth) stapled on the back and painting them.  Don't think you'd see the hole then?  Also thought about cutting them in 1/2 at the door hole, but then I'd have to cover them to hide the hollow core end and the size would be too diminished.

Gonna give it a try because I want to replace all of the doors in my house and that will bring me 8 more to work with.

Thanks again for stirring up the thought process!

Susan - great idea - and probably a lot more inexpensive than buying or renting some artsy-fartsy piece.  And you can reuse it too - right?  Still waiting for the tip on how to hang this.  How much did it weigh? We have the hooks that hold up to 150 pounds.  Was it wired or ??  Inquiring minds want to know. - Jennie

11/28/2007 12:23 AM by Jennie Norris, ASPM, IAHSP, We Stage Sacramento (We Stage Sacramento)

Jennie: They are not that heavy you can screw in 2 eye hooks and run some picture hanging wire through them and then hang it on a couple of 50lbs. hooks. They are actually lighter than most good sized mirrors.

WOW!  Great idea.  We are facing a similar project and large artwork has been on my list.

What kind of paint did you use (flat,semi-gloss, etc?) and how did you anchor the door to the wall and the artwork to the door?

12/17/2007 07:10 AM by Jo Potvin-Home Staging Cincinnati - Design To Market (Design To Market LLC)

Susan, OMG that is wonderful...WOW !!! To say the least. Love the idea for large walls..

12/17/2007 08:35 AM by MARY LOU TEAGUE HOME STYLE AND STAGING KNOXVILLE, TN (HOME STYLE AND STAGING LLC )

Jo: We used the same paint that was used in the kitchen. I think that it was a satin. but if I had to go out and buy paint I'd match the texture to the existing paint in the room. We put a hanger on the back of the door and 2 screws into to tha wall to support it. We also used screws on the door to hang the pictures on.

Mary Lou: I'm glad you like it!

Susan,  I just came across your post and have to give you more than the coveted raffia soap for inventiveness.  Great idea to add dimension and interest to the room this way.

Have you ever used Attach-its?  They attach to the object you are hanging then "hook" directly into the wall.  They leave little slits in the wall instead of holes.

04/30/2008 05:07 PM by Pam Faulkner-Faulkner House Redesign Stager-N. VA-Fairfax & Loudoun Co. (Faulkner House Interior Redesign)

Great idea!  Thank you for sharing.  The artwork pops with the architectural detail behind it.

Pam: Thanks for your comment and the tip for Attach-its.

Nancy: That artwork would have looked pretty wimpy with out it.
