Many of you have observed similar podcasts through the years with Leno's Jaywalking being the most notable.  This video was seen a few weeks ago care of the Huffington Post by Laura Hibbard.  It is difficult to make light of this due to it's sad reality of education in America.    Take note and ask your kids a few of the same questions and listen to the responses they give.  You might be surprised! Next we'll be discussing the benefits of how drugs enlighten our minds and accentuate the creativity within.  As if!

Mark, would you go so far as to say nearly impossible?  I believe that so much more could be done to improve our education system which in turn could heal many of our Country's ills.

Kevin,

Check out Kahnacademy.com.  The problem with education is like unraveling a bunch of yarn that has been twisting and turning and had 300 cats play with it, and that is just in one district.  What we are not owning up to is how easy it is to teach someone anything when done correctly and with out new facilities, it is the future of education......but then there are all these jobs at stakes and politics and blah, blah blah,  Ron and I volunteered at an entire school district in California and saw the machinations up close and personal...I won't bore you.  LOL you got my going, we value the power of education, but not at the level it has manifested in our schools. Kevin, I too have volunteered in our school system and am appalled at what we dont do as compared to the Asians & Europeans...our system only works for the self motivated & one's who are intelligent & i use that lightly...our whole system needs to change...too much emphasis is now placed on scoring high vs. teaching what needs to be learned...it is endemic.

Education is not valued by most Americans any longer. Just look at our immigration policy...it is almost impossible for an well educated engineer from Ireland to emmigrate to the USA...but it is very easy for uneducated non english people to jump to the front of the line or even come here illegally and eventually become legal. We spend billions on education but do not want to test  kids anylonger...we do not even keep score in gym class anymore. It is time to come down hard and teach children or keep them back if they do not learn. In Massachusetts the Governor wants to eliminate testing of high school seniors in the state wide MCAS because many children of immigrants can not pass the test.

Unbelievable. As a system, we put the emphasis on bashing teachers when students don't perform, not unlike punishing doctors if their patients get sick. It's going to take a lot of policy corrections to get out of this mess.

Good doctors cure patients.

Good teachers educate.

Good teachers motivate their students.

The system is broken. Face it.

Kevin ~ now that is some scary stuff.  Those kids will be running this country when we are old.  With JayWalking, many folks have been out of the "learning" scene for awhile, but those kids were in their learning environment when asked the questions (of which I knew all the answers).

Alexandra, I don't think I could stomach a volunteer year at our public school systems.  Not that I wouldn't try mind you it's simply so sad to see so much wasted talent in a small environment such as that.  I'm guessing you meant KhanAcademy.com, correct?

Ginny, so much more is going on in these kids lives than school.  Book learning is excellent when coupled with Life learning, certainly you observed that while volunteering.  Education is the chance we have available at our fingertips, in two generations we could be on top once again.  Asians spend about 30% more time in primary education than do Americans.  Many great teachers are in our midst if given the opportunity to shine.

Edward, wish you hadn't touched on the Phys. Ed. aspect.  When I pass by our schools and see the condition or I should say non-condition of our youth, honestly, it's frightening.  I was embarrassed if I brought home anything less than a "B" and if I did it would never happen 2 quarters in a row.  The HS drop-out rate is astonishing in this country.  Why don't we have an equitable solution to this?

Wayne & Jean Marie, sifting through alternatives khanacademy.com as Alexandra had mentioned is a great start.  Where did I first learn about it?  My adult son!  The process should be neverending.

Erv, I also am a fan of the K.I.S.S. principle.  When politicians rule our minds we're history.  Yeah, there's a little fun being bandied about with that statement however not much!

Dawn, you have earned the "Gold" star today.  Sounds silly but it did used to motivate us now didn't it?  The scary thing for me is knowing that more than 1600 High Schools in this U.S.A. fail to acheive a 60% graduation level.  Granted, they are mainly urban schools but that excuse just isn't cutting it any longer with me.  Did you catch the story last week about the HS which was paying their students to attend.  It's working!  Whatever it takes, these lambs should not be led to slaughter as we are doing now.

Could this be true?  I'm looking at it but I find it hard to believe.  Is this a case of not knowing the English language, just an innocent mistake, poor spelling habits, or not having a secular education?  Which prompts another question, how did this person get this job? Hmm...!

Dee, the picture reminded so much about the NFL ad where the guy was putting the finishing touches on the field for an upcoming KC Chiefs game.  A player leaving the stadium pointed out the mistake that he had written "Kansas City Chefs" in the endzone instead.  It would have been worse in real life but the perpetrator's response was "great gobbledegook" to his funny faux pas.  You did get to view the video link above it I hope?
