I was scratching my head like many of you on how I can get the little understood and mystical 'Other Points' to start moving.  While I don't have all the answers for you and some answers are found in other blogs in this forum I'd like to highlight a little discovery I made from looking around everyone's posts on the issue.

While I don't beleive in 'gaming' the system AR has provided us all with a fantastic opportunity to enhance our ranking.  Loging in to Localism using your AR login and password and drilling down to the community level allows one to upload photos for a specific community (city/town/village) and obtain points for those contributions.  In one day I've boosted my score by 1600 points.  What's more, you can contribute photos for communities other than your own and obtain points for doing so.

As an incentive I've noticed AR has not presently placed a limitation per day on these posts as with BLOG comments and posts. As long as this remains neglected I assume that this will remain the case.  We can all gain a lot by highlighting the bright spots in our community and commenting on the photos we choose to upload.  Take a few moments out and give it a try.  Let AR know what you think about this with a little comment to this post if you would.  I'd like to know how it works out for you!

Hi, I've been trying to do that and think I'll give it another try.  Thanks for the information.

What irks me is to see photos taken from community websites (ie logos) or from other sites and uploaded as original photos.  We all know our areas and when I see this I consider it "gaming" the system not to add that is a huge copyright violation.  I wish there was a way to report this to AR and get them removed. I carry my digital camera with me everywhere and take pictures all the time.

Keith, I upload the photos that I have put in my Localism blogs. Which I have taken of the areas I have blogged about. So the community can see my blog with my phots and also see the photos stand alone :)

I have uploaded quite a few but do less now as I see many photos placed by out of towners not give a true picture of my area. many pictures are sub-par in y opinion. A little disappointed after a great start.

The lure of easy points will ruin/has ruined Localism photos.  It is hard to understand what the goal is for Localism.  I guess there are bigger fish for AR gods to fry.

I had over 600 photos on Localism, and mods took some down, and I took the rest down.  It was the right thing all around.

I now have about 74 up, and am ambivalent about posting more, unless I have something I really like.

I believe that photo posting points should be limited to a few hundred points, total, and that possibly clicks on photos could generate additional points.

Cut and paste of others' photos should lead to suspension of posting privileges, IMO.

Mike has a great point. I find it less appealing and it has nothing to do with the points. A crappy photos get the same as a well thought out photo with some explanation. New Orleans is full or tourist photos. It is part of the culture but no where near a true picture.

With respect to the above observations, I agree that poor quality and abuse (not to mention plagiarism) is bad and there should be some sort of report like there is for commentary on ones blog where it can be flagged as spam, etc.  Remember, when I right these posts I try to do so with people's better nature in mind.  Just like anything, there will always be those who abuse any system.  I honestly think they're trying to do something good by highlighting communities to give them life like comment four above and tying them in with your blog is a great idea.  I suspect that was the original idea of the coders.  My only thought is max out the quality posts and photos regarding your and other communities in your region with commentary and get rewarded. Since a lot of folks ask about this they want to know.
