Heres one for the Home Inspection / Pest control folks among us.

I have a client who purchased a home a little over a year ago here in Southern NH.  They moved in in late September, lived in the home for about a week, and sudddenly their heating system is not working at all.  Since they have tankless hot water, they also cannot shower, wash, etc as ther is no hot water.

They get a service tech out to look at the system, and he opens up the fire box for the furnace, and proceeds to scoop out hundreds upon hundreds of Cricket carcasses.  Now, the home had been vacant for several months, as it was a Relo.  I figured (as did my client) that the crickets just nested there as there was no activity in the home and the system was unused.  It also has a direct vent to outside the exterior wall of the home and thus no chimney - making it moe accessible to the little buggers.

Anyways, the tech cleans it out, and they have heat an hot water for another year.

Same time of year, it happens again.  They just had a tech out again a couple weeks ago to scoop out all the dead Cricket carcasses.  The home has not been vacant this year as it was last year.  They are living there.

Anyone ever heard of Crickets clogging up an oil fired forced hot water system?  Everything works fine except the fire chamber gets filled up with bodies and thus cannot maintain a flame.

I know I'm scratching my head.

Holy cow, that is extremely peculiar. I ain't got the slightest idea what is happening. I will be REAL interested in seeing if anyone has a good explanation.

Never heard of this ... I am assuming that appropriate screens are on the vents and inlets?

Never heard of this either. I was going to ask the same question as Allen about the vents on the inlets/outlets. Perhaps they should consider getting a pest control person out there as well.

First I've ever heard of pests in a HVAC system.  You have an interesting story to tell for sure.

Howdy William

I have never came acrss or heard of it before now. They should make sure the vents and inlets have the appropriate small holes on them. I'll see if I can find anything out for you about this.

Have a good one

All - Well I am glad I am not the only one scratching his head.  From my cursory inspection during the buying process the vents and screens appeared to be in place.  They had a home inspection and have had it cleaned out twice.  I have suggested getting pest control involved, but it seems to only become a problem in late summer early fall.
