Rookie Agent- better keep your zeal! Let me tell you why!

Isn't it just like us as humans to loose our zest over anything when the newness wears off? Do you remember how it was when you had the new car and if a piece of lint got on the floor or a fingerprint was on the window, you immediately took action. Time passes... kids spill the drink in the floor, french fries are on the back seat.. no hurry... Remember when you first fell in love and you had a drive to talk to your new found love each day for hours about nothing? 15 years later it's a quick- see you this evening while you run out the door and what's for dinner when you get home and off to bed you go.

We fall into those ruts in our business too. Have you gotten lax on chasing every lead as carefully as possible? Do you still take the time to call your sellers with weekly updates? When was the last time you sent a card to a client just because or did a newsletter? Are you a stick a sign in the yard and throw it on MLS and forget it kind of agent? Do you email your clients to keep your name fresh in their minds?

It is easy to get "busy" and not give quite the attention to clients as we use to. Want to excel in this cool market and stand out from the rest? FIND your zeal and make people remember you! Make them want to tell everyone they know about how you helped them! Even the more well known and seasoned agents can't out-do an ambitious agent from a small company if that agent has a fire about them that rubs off on those they touch.

I recently saw this in my own life and business as I had a couple come back to me after experiencing the service of another agent their mom talked them into to trying for a while because they were a good friend of hers. This agent is very well known, works with a larger firm, has more experience but after they had already worked with me for a while, they were totally dissatisfied! Mom talked them into trying this agent when our listing had expired and since they have never sold a home before and didn't know what to expect or how advertising works, they agreed thinking that the larger company and mega agent somehow might be able to sell the house faster, advertise more, offer something I didn't. They told me on numerous occasions it had nothing to do with not being happy with me and I had done a good job, they were just too anxious for the house to sell and mom says this agent is big, company is big and surely it would be more beneficial. They called me after a just two months saying they were sorry! After less showings, less advertising (I am big on technology and the web!), little communication with few phone calls and waiting long periods of time for their calls to be returned, no personal attention( I knew when they were sick & when to send a card because I talked to them regularly)  and not making a CONNECTION with them, they were canceling their contract. They were VERY unhappy. They did just that. Texted me this week asking when I can come meet them.

Do I think I am something special because of this? No. But I know that I give all of my clients EXCEPTIONAL service. I take the time to know who they are so that I know HOW to best help them, communicate with them and meet their needs. I CALL them EVERY week. I remember what it was like when I sold my last house. I wasn't an agent then. I remember waiting days for a call back, days after showings before knowing if anyone even showed up and if there was any interest at all in my house. Wondering if anyone had even called to ask about my house that week... not seeing any advertising other than the sign in my yard and MLS. I remember being anxious and just needing a little reassurance. I feel very certain that even after I sell their house and help them buy their new one, they will remember who I am and will refer their friends and family to me. Isn't that what we all want? What does it take to get that? Be willing to go that extra mile! AND have some zeal while your at it. Life is short to be mediocre!!

Real estate is definitely a profession that requires one to maintain their "zeal".  Motivation and positivity are of the utmost importance!!

Losing Zeal is exactly what Seth Godin talks about in his book The Dip. We all do it no matter whether it is a new hobby or a diet.

It is easy to loose zeal isn't it? It is important to consistently re-evaluate ourselves and stay motivated.

Melissa, you are so on target with your thoughts. Bigger company, bigger agent is not ALWAYS better. Sometime a client gets lost in the crowd and smaller is better for more attention. EXCEPTIONAL service is where it's at and you've got it.
