Sometimes the best tools are the tools we already have. The Microsoft Windows XP Start menu is a great way to organize your software tools, it's free, and if you are running Windows XP, it's already installed. All you need to do is customize it so that you can access the programs you use most.
Click on the Start button in the lower left corner of your screen to open the Start menu.

On the left side of the Start menu you will see various program icons with a divider line somewhere in the list. These icons will launch the programs, websites, or documents they represent.
Icons above the divider line are "pinned" to the Start menu, meaning they will always be listed even if you haven't used them recently.
Icons below the divider line are not pinned to the Start menu. They appear on the Start menu because they were the most recently used "unpinned" programs or documents.
Here is how to optimize your Microsoft Windows XP Start menu:
Right click on a pinned icon that you do not use regularly and select Unpin from Start menu or Remove from This List to remove the icon from the pinned icons area.
Right click on an unpinned icon that you use regularly and select Pin to Start menu to pin that icon to your Start menu so that you can find it quickly next to you need it.
To pin additonal program icons that do not already appear on the Start menu, click on All Programs and scroll to locate the program icon. Right click on that icon and select Pin to Start menu to pin that icon to your Start menu.
Repeat the steps above as needed. When you finish, you will be two clicks away from the programs you use most often and you won't have to spend time searching through a sea of icons on your desktop.
Thanks for the blog. It will help to organize what we are used to working with and add what we need most.
